Title says it all. This is always something I wondered, but always forget to ask.

Was it purely financially motivated?? The hood is so bad ass looking, that it blows my mind they continued the grabber without it.

I am sure someone has a simple answer.

I completely agree! What were they thinking?? That is a fantastic looking hood. Somebody must have agreed with us, because they transplanted the lines and scoops onto a Ranger hood that now sells for over $600!

I've wanted one from the day I first saw one, and somehow I've managed to have three of them pass into my hands, one of which I sold for a meager $250.

I bet it's the whole financial/profit aspect like you said. It sure does look sweet though. :)

More than likely it was a cost issue, 73 was the start of a bad time in automotive history, The maverick started to be come more of a "economy car" and a stock hood would be cheeper to produce than a Grabber hood. Remember it all comes down to the bean counters in the head office. Russ

Well it seems that they made "about" 80k cars with the hood and who knows how many hoods for "spares",if they made every Mav with the hood they would not be rare would they? Be glad You have one

    2 year Grabber hood

My name is Joe and I have 26 years with Ford at Wayne Assembly Plant (focus). I can tell you what I think about the hood though they may I may not be completly correct. Ford used to make major styling changes every 2 model years to stay ahead of the compitation. Different models with different parts causes assembly mistakes and repairs to be made in pre delivery. It also causes part shortages. Demand plays a big role here also. Some people didn't like the Grabber Hood as some people didn't like the shaker and or the standard Mach 1 hoodscoop! I think Ford could have made the Grabber hood optional on all year Grabbers. Also the hood on the frist Grabber was just striped! It easy to look back and see what could have been done. Its hard to see even next year. I have a 74 Grabber and I love the graphics. It makes the car! The hood stripe makes the car look longer and meaner! All in all I think they did a good Job with the Maverick, I dont think they made a lot of money/car and thats the bottom line. Sometimes when I look at the side of a focus the character lines remind me of a Maverick. Also the grill with thoses trunsignals lamps. Sometimes I wonder! Joe:D

Yeah...when I look at my Focus...I see my Maverick. Both don't run and are sitting in a garage. :(

On the orange one....well....no. I had to finish putting siding on my rental house garage. Got that done. Was going to start in on the orange car...then I bought that Comet. Once I get the Comet stripped...then I will start in on the orange one.

Flat out, it is cheaper for Ford to have one part rather than two. As performance became a dirty word, you gotta get rid of the more expensive to produce performance hood. Simple economics.

I gotta say, the Grabber hood is one of the best looking performance hoods ever produced. Just enough, but not too much. It's really a classic.
