Which Pulleys To Use... (on a budget)

Application: 5.0 based 347 c.i. Strip-only '70 Maverick with belt driven Water Pump

I'm finally getting around to addressing my crankshaft/alternator/water
pump pulley set up. I tried to use the Radiator, Water Pump and
Alternator from the donor car (1990 Mustang V-8) which uses the
    serpentine belt.

Problem: The '90 Tensioner will not work as it holds tension in the opposite
direction of what I need (now that I've eliminated the a/c, smog pump, and
ps). I broke the Tensioner down and reversed the spring but the results
were not as I had hoped, so I abandonded that idea.

I have an old-style Alternator Bracket I tried using but my waterpump
(1990) is counterclockwise rotation. I have no problem in getting a
clockwise rotation wp if it comes down to it (more than likely will need it).

The problem with that setup (if I changed out water pumps) is that the
grooves on the inside of the serpentine belt would ride on the no-grooved
('90) waterpump pulley. Although some say this is okay, others advise
against it - I would like to avoid doing that.

Which brings me to the following conclusion: a) I need to use the old-style
alternator brackets (which I have). b) I'll also need to go to a water pump
that has the inlet on the driver's side (to match up to location of current
radiator outlet) and c); change out the serpentine pulleys for a V-belt
setup. I'd want the Water Pump to be aluminum (if practical). I believe an
'80 302 Cougar has the water pump I need - still checking on that.

I realize I could get an electric water pump motor, but please remember I
need to do this on a budget. So, I'm thinking I could get by using a Single
Groove Pulley Set from a 1971-ish V-8 with no accessories?

Does this sound right and do you recommend a place to purchase the pulley
set (as both AutoZone and O'Reilly's do not offer them) and a reference
Make and Model to use as a go-by for the pulleys?

    Thanks for any input, guys.

The damper uses a four-bolt pulley

The damper is held to the crank with 1 bolt ... but has either 3 or 4 holes in it to bolt the pulley to the damper ... I think 3 holes is an early damper and 4 holes is later ... post 1968 ...

Don't know if it will work for you but you may be able to use the March AC eliminator idler to address the issue.

If you change to a standard rotation water pump you will need to change the timing cover also. The flow ports go the opposite direction when you compare the covers. I just went through this and finally went with a complete March Serpentine setup for a standard rotation pump, but it wasn't cheap.

I used that set up on the Sprint with no problems. I eventually bought a March set up just for the looks.

To make certain of your (earlier) setup; you used the serpentine belt with a counterclockwise waterpump? What make/model car did you get the pump for?

I assume it's inlet is on the driver side (same as radiator outlet)?

Also, did you swap the timing chain cover too?

Thanks a lot for your help guys.

Mine was just a standard 3 pully set up so I had a Maverick appliction, standard rotation water pump. I picked up pullys from junkyard motors. All the serpintine water pump pullys I found were smooth.

Well, it looks like the March Performance setup is the way to go.

    Budget is a relative term.

Well, I already have the serpentine pullies and my donor tensioner. All I'd
need is the alt bracket and the ac/ps eliminator bracket (both combined for
less than $100 at Summit). I won't be getting the shiney covers.

It is actually a little more expensive than doing the pulley/wp swap - maybe,:hmmm:
but I feel more comfortable with this setup as I know my existing wp &
    timing chain cover match.

My luck, I'd probably have to use spacers to mach the pullies to my
    existing (zero balance) damper.

I'll post up with p/n's and $ with whatever I eventually wind up doing.

    Thanks again.
