I am looking towards dumping my stock ported heads and either want some edelbrocks or AFRs mabye canfields...
I would prolly buy new intake and cam and carb to go along with the new heads... I am looking for max power gains.... What does everyone think ?

I have edelbrock RPM's on the mustang (351) and the maverick (302) but I voted for the AFR's the have impressive CNCed intake and exhaust ports. Edelbrock advertisements say the they are CNC ported, the two sets I have where just port match to a gasket. You could feel the intake port get larger farther in the and the exhaust got smaller at the exit. Hope that makes sence, I cleaned both sets up nice and smooth....be the air feel the flow :D

In all the test I have seen, there is not that mouch difference between these heads....
of course it is a matter of "everything" working together. Head, cam, intake, etc.
when I built my motor, I built everything around the heads....I contacted AFR and ask them what they recommended for my applications.
Looking at what you have already done......I would go with the Evilbrock heads!

I have AFR's, one advantage of the Edelbrock's are the treaded inserts in the exhaust!! (I now have one threaded insert on the number one exhaust, 15 more to go)

I have a chance to get a set of new, in the box, GT40 X-303 swirl heads for $900.
The guy has 3 sets straight from Ford. He said he got a deal because they are slow movers.
They don't flow what I want for my Windsor, but then the price sounds good for aluminum heads...
    What ya think?
If anyone is interested in the other 2 sets, I can hook you up with his number.

If you run a cam with any serious lift or duration, watch out for the AFR springs. It seems they tend to float valves pretty early unless you upgrade them. These would prolly still be the heads I went with if I had any money. Despite their crappy springs, they are killer heads.

Im not sure if they have changed their design, but apparently Edelbrock used to build their heads with no spring cup!! Look here for the reason that this is a bad thing. I know nothing about Canfields except that I will prolly never be able to afford a set :D Anyways, good luck with your "head hunt" hehe...

EDIT: Looking at your combo, you may want to consider AFR 165 heads over the 185s.

I spoke with Edelbrock about the spring cup deal. They started using them in February of 1998, so unless your heads are pretty old, you're okay.

And get you checkbook ready too! You can buy the small port versions on Ebay with Ti valves for around $1200...used, but good heads. Big port heads are great and make upwards of 900 HP when built right, but they are for use on turbo/nitrous/blower motors 400+ inches (or a 9500:eek: RPM 358 for which they were designed for). Upgrading them to work on a run-of-the-mill mild small block will require a lot of epoxy. There was a guy at the digs a while back (actually 2 guys...same cars though) that had a set of Yates take offs that he had spent about $3000 total investment to get them ported for their motors, and they weren't but .05 faster than my out-of-the-box Victor Jrs...and the motors were almost identical. They all (including mine) used Flying toilets as well.

Great heads, but they are just set up wrong unless they're ported by a guy that knows what he's doing.
