When I first touch the gas, she tries to stall

OK, so the 72 Mav is back from getting her replacement gas tank, sending unit, fuel filter, and carb. Took her out yesterday and today. One annoying problem... when I come to a stop she idles fine, but when I first touch my foot to the gas pedal, she threatens to stall. She doesn't actually stall, but the oil, alt, and temp lights flicker and the engine seems to 'gulp' for just a half sec. Then off she goes like nothing's wrong. The harder I punch the gas, the less it happens. But when turning from a full stop, flooring it is not really an option. It's almost as if the flow of fuel is getting pinched-off for a half sec.

Is the answer as simple as a spray of carb cleaner? Or is something else going on here?

Thanks in advance for any tips.

I would say try turning the idle screw up a little and the air fuel mixture may need to be little richer. Sound like it is starving for fuel/getting too much air when the carb first opens. JMHO
I am sure someone more mechanically incline will tell you better than me but that is where I would start.

kinda sounds like the accelarator pump isnt squirting enough fuel.

Your accelerator pump is out of adjustment.

Thanks fellas... that would explain it. I'll check it out. I asked my mechanic about the carb, and he said it was a rebuild but didn't remember the brand.

Yeh, that's what happened with the Mav before I replaced the gas tank, sending unit, and fuel filter. I'd gun it and she'd stall and coast to a stop. The old rusty tank was kicking crap into the fuel lines.

The current problem is different. The more gas I giver her, the better. On the open road, she's fine. Just starting from a full stop, she 'hiccups' sometimes. Tweaking the accelerator pump should solve her.

A quick update... My 72 is back on the road after a few tweaks to her carb. Hesitation problem seems solved.

I had her out today and she was smooth and consistent off the line. Idle seems smoother as well. Best she's run since I've owned her.

Thanks for the help, all who responded.
