Hello, My Comet had front disc brakes put on before I acquired it. I am trying to determine what year the calipers are so I can get the proper brake pads. A mechanic put on pads that are for a 74 Comet and they are not the right size. They continually rattle. The pictures show what looks to be a single piston caliper. They are Ford calipers and one of the is stamped "1967". From the pictures I've seen in the research I've done it seems they may be actually 1968 calipers manufactured in 1967. Pictures of 1967 caliper had 4 pistons. Can you all take a look and let me know what you think the right year is. Once I get this down I can get the right pads and cure the rattle issue. Thanks!
Those are most assuredly mid 1970s to early '80s, about every Ford vehicle used a similar caliper in that time period... This is '68-'73 Mustang & '68-'71 Torino brakes...
That doesn't mean it's 1967, that's something that's been added later probably by a rebuilder. The 4 letter casting code is where you get the date.
That those aren't FoMoCo casting date codes, or even a basic part number for a caliper... Ford uses a alpha-numeric system that repeats the next decade... Would read 8L14 for Nov 14 1968, 4L14 for Nov 14 1974, 5A2 for Jan 2 '75, etc... It could be a date system that uses year and number of day, but I didn't think Ford used such... In that case it could be 1977, 274th day and 1978, 270th day...
