Been meaning to ask this for a while, just haven't gotten around to it till now. When I first got my '72, the speedometer didn't work after I got the engine and trans in and running. Figgured out it was the speedometer cable, so I swapped it out with the one from my '74 Grabber. This was part of the speedometer cable, plugged into the gauge cluster and the other end the cable from the transmission screwed to. Now, I have pulled alot of insturment clusters in junkyards and stuff in all diffrent year Mavericks includeing other late 72's, but I have never seen anything like this? All my other Mavericks and ones I have seen in junkyards just have a straight cable comeing up to the speedometer. What is it, what was it's purpose? The wire plugs into the wireing harness under the dash. I didn't notice anything diffrent when I uplugged it, but then again I don't know if it ever worked in the first place since the cable was bad going to it. Has part number D2AF-9E371 on it.

That is a speed amplifier, part of the early Ford "Speed Control System" (cruise control). Early cruise only worked between 30mph and 80mph, and that is the thing that figured out how fast you were going. Now the real question is, what was it doing on a Maverick? I thought Mav's didn't have cruise? Eric J (Just read that other thread on the emissions sensor. Ford probably used the amplifier in that system too, that would explain it being on a Maverick.) .
Ahh, didn't even see that other thread. This is a California car, 71 (Los Angeles) D.S.O. So exactly how did this tie into the ignition system or whatever it tied into originally? Something has to be made inoperative by removeing it I would think. I have found no traces of emissions on this car, but then again it is 35 years old and I know it hasn't been in California for over 10 years. Dosen't help that it had no drive train and was in general disrepair when I bought it, so no telling what someone may have take off of it years before. The drivetrain and under hood wireing harness is from an original Georgia car. The under dash harness is all that is original from the California car. I have a problem some times where the car will not start and I am getting no power to the coil. If you turn the ignition on and off several times over and over, it will start. Just wondering if this may have something to do with it.
I can't find that part number in the parts manual but the number range indicates it is an emissions part ...
Cool, guess I will just put it up for later if it can be used for cruise control. That is something I want to try doing in the future.
