What does the control module do? I suppose it's for the blinkers? And how do you know if it has gone out?

i think the only "module" in your car would be the ignigtion module

Is that all it would do? It's located on the drivers side in front of the wheel well. The one that's installed has some black gooey stuff that seemed to ooz out of it. But everything was working when I got it...like the engine purred. But now it is running rough, like one cylinder isn't firing, but I've checked and the wires are sending the power. I'm just wondering if this "module" is a possible problem. Here's a pic. Also, I've seen some postings where some were able to post the picture within the text, like without having to upload one, is it like a copy and paste kinda' thing? Thnx,

yea thats the module i was talking about

mine was dead when i got my car. sometimes it would have spark, sometimes it wouldnt. a new one was $50. usually when the goo melts off the back that how you know its bad, but my goo stayed solid so i guess thats not always true.

the fact that your only loosing spark in one cylinder tho leads me to believe the problem ma be elsewhere. when mine would decide to not work i would have no spark anywhere

Yea, can't see how the box would make it not fire on one cylinder since the box itself dosen't know the difference between which cylinder is firing. Maybe try a new set of spark plugs and wires, cap and rotor, if they haven't been replaced in a long time.

There are cheaper alternatives to the Ford ignition module that do the same job.

It sounds like one cylinder isn't firing but I'm not sure which one though. The car had new spark plugs installed before it was parked, I took them out and cleaned them, so I don't think that is the problem. I'm still a novice so any tricks would help a little. Thanks

Definitely not the module. If it goes bad, the car will not start at all. If you know the plugs are good, start with the dist cap, then plug wires. Cheapest way to go. Hopefully one of hose will take are of it.

my car runs for a little while then shuts off, but it starts right back up.
would it be the control module?
also what is that little box under the starter solenoid?

the little box is the voltage regulater, so the alternator doesnt over charge the battery

when my module went it woudnt start right back up. id have to crank it and wait untill it decided to start(probably after it cooled down) but usually the battery would just die after all the cranking

It could definitely be the module. I have seen them do that quite often...several years ago.

Module or the stator assembly on the disributor.Had a 76 thunderchicken that would do that.Drove me nuts for 2 days.Module was good, stator was not.replaced it and never had a starting problem again.

It could also be a bad coil. The coil is the cheapest to replace but I would check it out before I replaced anything.

My dad's '95 Mustang was doing that too, it would start missing and then just totally die, and would not start back up immediately. Let it sit for a few minutes, and it would fire right back up like nothing happened. I replaced the pickup module in the distributor last year, no problems since.
