My anti -virus has done good so far keeping them quarentened but you never know ... Update your anti-virus's ... I think i caught mine in time before it effected anyone else . But again you never know ...
KLEZ !!! I have been receiving similar e-mails and most of them are infected with the KLEZ virus. The person(s) who has the virus is in the Maverick community as the "From" address often contains an e-mail that I recognize. The "From" address is randomly inserted from the address book and is not being sent by that person. I am quite sure that the person who is infected is also using AOL. To find out more about the virus and how to remove it, look here. http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.gen@mm.html If you do have a virus scanner, it needs to be constantly updated at least on a monthly basis to be effective. Even if you bought a virus scanner last week, it has to be updated as it may have been sitting on a store shelve for months and does not recognize the latest threats. Here is a list of free virus scanners Here is a list of free anti-virus scanners: http://www.free-av.com/ http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.htm Remember, once you do install one of these softwares, you may have to update the antivirus definitions right away.
I just got done dealing with Klez myself I dunno where I got it from, fortunatley my address book was very small almost nonexistant as I hadn't yet redid it from my last format. I started getting weird e-mails at first I didn't think much of it but then I noticed an e-mail to my dymanitemail account which was from one of my Juno accounts! an account I hadn't used in months, thats when the alarm went off. Most of the e-mails I got were things like IE 6.0 Patch, the fake Klez removal trick one, and random server errors. I finally got Norton Installed and got rid of it basically the virus operates out of the Windows temp folder upon startup if you're quick enough with the ctrl+alt+delete you can stop it from loading and basically contain it because it will not allow you to get an anti virus program installed while it's running (at least it didn't for me until I figured out how to contain it). Don't try to delete it's files because it will simply restore them on your next bootup it infects random files so you may loose a few programs once it's removed (I did). Here is a link you can use to get a removal tool for it if you can't get an Anti Virus program installed. http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.removal.tool.html
Klez Yes, I was getting 3 or 4 e-mails a week with the Klez virus. Luckily, my Norton's would quarantine the files and I would later delete them. I probably received 25 or 30 of these various e-mails with the Klez virus since October!
