ive relaced every part in relation to timing electronicly.new alternator and distributor/points.had problem with car running rough had to keep gassin it at stop lights and had to set timing advance to keep it running. startin to run richer and richer with darker smoke every day.car shokes out so i did timing chain oil pump fuel pump and rebuilt carb to give a nice 120,000mile tuneup.did make a difference car turns over and runs without missing now.but runs like S**T.motor shakes violently.car starts up as it should with a simple turn of the key!the timing couldent be off it would be imposible i checked my work 5 times over.im thinking valve problem from the get go. 72 mav sat for 15 years then i drove it for 2,000 miles.when i turn the fan im hearing a hissing sound coming from the cylenders on different strokes(valves leaking?) any advice on what i should do to check this or what u think would be the best way to go about finding a solution.this I6 has been hell and il be damned if i give up on fixing it and drivin it for another 20,000.
Question- When you replaced the timing chain, had it jumped? was it a tooth off? Probably bent some valves it it jumped a tooth. I would do a compression check. Might want to inspect the dampener too, they are known to slip on the hub, rendering the timing mark useless.
need to a compression check and a cylinder leak down test. the leak down test will tell you exactly where you have a problem if you do.
yeah "leak down test" was what i was lookin at.Thanks much id be broke and stuck in the same spot without your help guys.
