I had a trans given to me it looks like a c4 but it came out of a Mustang II with a v6.Is this a c4,and can i swap a v8 bell on it to make use of it? Thanks Derek.
It is probably a C3 and not very useful behind a V8. I think you would be better off to find a C4 and maybe sell the bell housing or whole trans to someone on ebay etc. They usually have three foward clutches, and can be upgraded to C4 but still would have to get another C4 for donor parts or scrounge them from some one who has parts for sale etc. I have a fellow around here that wants to put a V6 in a 65 Mustang, and has been looking for one of those bells. Don't know if he still is going to do it or not.
If it is a C4, you can use it...but they aren't the strongest C4's. Not a problem on a mild V8 though. I have a few bellhousings laying around....if you want to use that C4, I'll swap you one of mine for yours, as long as it's a C4 and not a C3. C3 is a totally different transmission...
Get the codes off the front servo cover. If it is a C4 then you only have to put in two drums and a shift kit to make it ready for your V8. That is unless you want to run 3 clutches in both the forward and the Hi/reverse clutch drums. For the shift kit the TransGo 40-2 is what I recommend unless you have the know-how to do it with out the kit. The C4's that are behind 6 cylinder engines might be the same on the outside but the internal parts are no made to take the torque of a V8 - not even for a little while. A stock V8 can eat up a stock V8 C4 very fast (less than a year) and if you put a C4 from a 6cyl behind a V8 you can cut the life expectancy to less than 6 months for a careful driver. A large auxillary cooler will help keep it cool but if there aren't enough clutches to hold the torque then it is going to slip even with the cooler. Paul
I don't know what it is, but I had one in a '74 Mustang II with that German V6. I was told that the bands were too weak to take a V8. I know the motor was weak on torque but would wind to 6000+, and would chirp into 2nd. Seth
