You can put just about any transmission behind your SBF, Powerglide, C4, 4spd, 5spd, 6spd manuals......................of course a 3spd manual also. Most of the other tranmissions may not fit because of the bellhousing width and tranmission size................maybe a small C6 would work also.............just depends on what you want and how much you have to spend........personally I think a 6spd would be great with some really low rearend gears.................maybe 4.56's.......................IMHO

I guess the biggest question should be do you want a manual or an automatic?
For an auto you can rebuild your C4 but if you drive it on the highway allot the AOD and some lower gears in the rear end make it allot funner car. You can still race it around and get semi decent fuel economy and you can cruise at 75mph.
If you want a manual you can get the 3 speed the 4 speed toploader but if you want an overdrive unit(5 speed) you can find a T5 which is the most common manual swap in our cars. You can find one of them used for about $500, or rebuild on ebay for $1000... or new for $1500 and there are parts easily available for them. But you will have to buy all the components too make it work, flywheel, clutch, clutch pedals.

But then again I went from a C4 to an AOD because I drive allot of highways and the C4 sucked gas really bad with 3.0:1 gears. And I went from an AOD to a 5 speed because of other issues and utimately it came to be a 5 speed because I wanted it to be a 5 speed but in all reality I think the car is allot more fun now.

But to be honest with you I probably would get my but whipped at the drag strip by allot of these guys with C4 transmissions and 4:11 gears but overall I think my car is allot more fun to drive now then when I first got it. So its all about preference and what you want to do with your car.

I've always been under the assumption that real hot rods have 3 pedals and automatics are for the handicapped.....:rofl2:

No flak, but my dad told me when he was alive, "Real Hot Rods Don't Have Valve Covers", and I took that to hart when I build my A Coupe with blown "Flathead" V8, or the phrase "Real Hot Rods Don't have fenders". I look at your car more of a Retro-Rod than hot rod.................but that's just me.:yup:

Thanks Frank, I really appreciate you not making fun of us "Ole" over 65 handicapped people. You know what they say, "You don't get older, just better".
