was just wondering: The AOD trans uses Dextron2.. can that be sustituted with Type F.. a guy I know at the parts store says it increases line pressure and in return makes the shift firmer and the trans last longer.... is any of this true??
Not sure how safe it is for that specific transmission, but I happen to know that B&M Trick-Shift fluid is nothing more than Type-F with blue dye instead of red. I have always liked the way that Type-F shifts. I'm not sure if modern transmission clutch material and seals are compatible with it or not...
Im not going to tell you to use it, Because auto transmissions can be funny anmials. But i will yell you that i rebuild a lot of transmissions ( stock & Hipo) I do not ever use dextron, It actually has slip additives added. I do use type f, Trickshift, Moble 1 synthetic motor oil 0 w 30. For Hipo the trickshift works best. Install a good cooler and bypass the radiator unless you live way north with temps below freezing most of the time. Also dont forget to drain the converter, be sure the tv cable is set correct, enjoy your new firm shifts
This is my first tranny rebuild, so I want to do it right. I always have used type F but have never used it in a rebuilt tranny. didn't know if it would hurt the break in.. as for the motor oil: I had a person tell me just today that he used to run 5-30 in his trannys. I thought he was pulling my leg... I have read the rebuild manual about 4 times so far to get ready for this.. I can rebuild an engine in my sleep but have never been inside a trans.. I know I can take it apart and get it back together, its just that I dont know what a bad part looks like.
Yes...according to my manual, you can substitute Dexron with Type F, but you can't put Dexron in a Type F transmission....
Tranny fluid is just lightweight engine oil with additives like detergent and red dye... (so you know what is leakng in your driveway) I know folks that run tranny fluid in their engine oil because the high detergent content keeps the engine clean. I know old timers that run it in their gas tanks to keep their engines free of carbon build up. Again a benefit of the detergent. My dad used to run a half a quart straight down his carb once or twice a year. Said it cleaned his chambers, pistons, and valves. Dave
Use the manuel it will give you measurement of good and bad parts, In most autos you will know if the parts are good or bad just by looking. The trick to a auto is to be clean as you possiably can be. and know that is still not clean enough. 1 grain of sand can and will hang a valve so be clean. Use lots of vasoline and or trans assembly lube. I use ether for the final rinse on parts. Trans go makes a very good reprogramming kit. Measure everything at least 4 times. BE clean and enjoy the experiance.
