Torque Converter rub

    I have a 73 maverick with a 200 i6 and c4. I recently pulled the transmission because the front seal was leaking. When I got the transmission out I noticed that the torque converter had been rubbing the bell housing. When I put the new seal in and put it back in the car the seal leaked worse than ever. I guess I could have bent the seal but not sure. The rubbing is what has me puzzled. Any of you have this same issue?

    Did you get it in far enough? sometimes when you think the torque converter is in, it still has to go a little more, maybe that's why it leaked worse?

    I did not get any pictures. should have I guess. Its rubbing on the backside towards the transmission. The outer edge behind the flywheel. The rubbing occured prior to me pulling the tranny.

    Bent flywheel/nut plate or balooned converter housing.possible bent input shaft on trans...Do you get any weird vibrations when the car is running??? also excessive crank end play comes to mind,but if it was that bad you would have more than just a trans leak.Improperly seated converter could do it also but... if that were the case I would think you would damage/break the trans pump.Bent snout on the converter would do it too(the shaft that engages the pump gear)Good luck.

    I always have the wierd problems. lol. I never felt a vibration of any kind or heard any rubbing noises. My transmission buddy said it could have been an old rub. like it happened in the past.

    Thats very possible...do you see rub marks on the exhisting converter? if not... I wouldnt worry about it.

    yes there is rub marks. bout an inch wide all the way around.

    try torque converter bushing..... ill almost guarantee that's the problem

    Bryant makes an excellent point.If the motor plate is missing you loose about a 16th of an inch clearance.If you have it apart now I would insert/seat the converter on the trans and spin it to see whats going on.Check the flywheel/nutplate and see if its bent anywhere.

    I didnt see any plate when i took it apart and put it back. My Step-Dad suggested the bushing as well. Is that plate a common part to find? Is the bushing something that I could do easily (I dont know much about transmissions)?
