I am done with my rebuild and restoration except paint. Anyway I have an Edelbrock 600 4bbl. My car started right up after the rebuild. I adjusted the idle (550 in drive and 750 in park). Everything works fine. I have HEI and many performance parts. Here is the question, what should a novice like me do to "tune" the carb for max. performance. From my laymans stand point it seems really good the way it is, but I know it prolly needs to be tuned (air/fuel, maybe more). On a simialr point, it seems to be firing real good with the stock .45 gap autolite platinum. Should I mess with the gap? Should I just take it to a shop to play around with the carb for 1/2 hour to get it perfect?
Dave I did buy it new. It came with a DVD. The DVD says look in the book for tuning (other than idle). This book is pretty damn thick and for an attorney like me who is lucky to have rebuilt this car (with a lot of help from you guys), the book is really intimidating and technical. Any easy tips or should I just "take it in" to get it perfect?
Your an attorney? and you are intimidated by a book??? Sorry. If it seems to be working well and doesnt have any hiccups or run too rich.Leave it be till you can digest some of the basic tuning tips in the book.Or have someone tweak it for you if you want to,Its up to you.Just make sure you take it to someone who knows his stuff, and not some sears grease monkey.Ask lots of questions of the tuner too if you go that route.Good luck.
The only place to tune a carb is on a chassis dyno. Take it to a shop that has one (a dyno) and spend the money to tune it if you think it needs to be fine tuned.
