The old motor wasn't working out so went with a 96 explorer GT40 motor. Just finished going through the motor and freshening it up. The motor is now in and it is faster than ever! Even got the vent shades installed!
No problem at all. You will need to change out a few things to work with the 5.0. But it fits great, no complaints at all.
That's just another option. I'm just getting serious about my build. Waiting for sheetmetal to come in.
If you do this swap make sure to find a low mileage explorer 90K or less. Mine was at90k and the inside of the motor was beautiful I changed out all the gaskets and made sure everything was ok. You will need to change to a 50oz fly wheel, stock timing cover, 50 oz harmonic balanced, front sump oil pan and that should be it.
Tidy Looking Installation Will : Car looks great ! How did your window visors line up ? When are you going to drop by the plant in Deland ? Cometized (Chip)
Using the stock manifolds right now. I eventually plan on getting a new exhaust system and I'll go with headers then.
Hey chip! They line up fantastic. I found a NOS set online for 20 dollars and they fit fantastic! I was super lucky on finding those! I need to fix my exhaust leak which is going to require me to change the studs on my manifolds. I should have the car safe to drive and less smelly near the end of the month when I have time off from work. So probably end of the month to early December?
That is a nice looking car. I suppose getting a whole roller motor with gt40 heads trumps transplanting those heads on an old 302. Did you do anything besides new gaskets? My, my, what a simple way to liven up the party!
We went through the motor to make sure everything looked ok. Honestly the motor looked great so didn't need to rebuild it st the time. So placed all new gaskets, sealed it very well, and threw it in! I might change it up later down the road, but this thing has plenty of power for now.
Hi Will: Looking forward to seeing you then . Give me a call when you're planning on driving over and I'll give you the plant 'address' so you can GPS it if you like . We built our place in the Deland Airport ( Old Navy Base ) from the forties and it's easy to find . I have some carb and manifold setups we've removed from the cars we've updated to Fuel Injection which have Ceramic Coated manifolds , and ' jetted ' carbs for performance that you may be interested in . I don't put these on craigs list or ebay because I don't want to SHIP them and get them banged around .. Local Pickup ONLY .. that's why I'm mentioning it to you . If YOU already have that dialed in .. then perhaps you know another MAVERICK / COMET enthusiast that may be interested . ( Many other parts also) .. Lemmeno Will: Thanks, Cometized (Chip)
