Thanks to all that gave me advice on how to get my maverick to pass emissions. It passed! I set the timing to 0, had the screws out 1/4 turn and 4 bottles of alcohol later, it passed way below standards.

Once again thanks for the advice, I couldn't of done it without your help!

I didn't know that there was any state that had emissions requirements for vehicles before 1980 - or in this case, before 1974.

yup... arizona has ALL cars go through emissions.. i dont see why, the air isnt that bad..

i wonder if california, in all its analness, requires older cars to emission test..

    anyone want to elaborate?

Not all, just '67 and up, cause they were the first to have emmisions standards. But you only have to pass the standard that was set for the vehicle when it was made. As for why, its pretty simple. Rust. We don't get it here, so there are a LOT of old cars on the road, and the EPA won't allow the state to not test older cars because they make up a signifigant portion of the driving "fleet". The law we just got for "classic" automobiles was what happened to the legislatures try to exempt all cars 25 years or older, after the epa got finished with it. But you just learn how to make it pass, and trust me, you can get anything to pass.

The Ill. gov'nr did some dancing around the "signifigant portion of the driving fleet" issue. Basically he only wanted to test (and have equiptment for testing) the OBD II cars, which are 1996 & up. Sort of a cost cutting thing.

    Wow.
In Oklahoma, we have no emissions tests for any vehicle. We have no inspections either. Emissions laws do apply, but they are a visual test (make sure the cats are there).
