My husband and I decided to go to a car show today about 30 miles up the line. He drove the Stallion and I drove the 77' Maverick. At one point in the trip we came up on an intersection with a stoplight. The left turn lane has to wait for the light, but the right turn lane only has to yield to oncoming traffic. I made the right turn with no problem. My husband behind me in the Stallion started to pull out but had to stop for a fast moving oncoming car. The guy behing him in a VW Passat wasn't paying attention and plowed into the back of the Stallion  ! The VW pushed the Stallion halfway out into the intersection, but thankfully the oncoming car did not hit it. There was practicly NO damage to the Stallion.:whew: The big, clunky 5 MPH bumper guards did thier job. The only damage to the car was some slight paint cracking on the rear plastic filler and the one bumper guard pad got kind of squashed. The Passat got a small crack in it's plastic bumper. The Passats owner was horribly upset about hitting the Stallion and wanted to buy the car a new bumper on the spot. ( oddly enough he was going to the same car show). There was no damage to the bumper and we told him not to worry about it. Considering how hard the bumper got hit, if the car had the smaller rear bumper, the bumper would have gotten bent, the taillight panel would have been pushed in along with the valance and possibly the trunk floor would have been damaged as well. The big bumpers may be ugly and heavy, but they serve thier purpose. That big old bumper may have just saved us about $1500 in repairs, and after today there is no way I would ever switch them for the smaller bumpers. BTW, does anyone happen to have a bumper pad for the bumper guard they could part with?

I've considered mount a 3rd brake light in the 74 that I use as a semi-daily driver .... Not sure if it would have helped in you situation but Maverick brake lights are tough to see ...

    Hi Jean,

Glad you guys were not hurt and damage was at a minimum. I do believe I have a rear bumper pad that I'll gladly give you. Which side do you need or would you like the whole set? I think I gave you the front set last winter so the rear should still be around here somewhere. Let me know.

    Sam :)

All things considered, the show was great. Only had one person thought our Mavericks were Vegas:huh: . Once he realized they were Mavericks, he was really fascinated with them. We had one person after another stop to talk about Mavericks they once had or still had. There was even a free-lance newspaper reporter who wants to do a story about our Mavericks. Once his editer gives him the OK, he will look us up sometime this fall. That should be really cool.:) There were 7 cars in our class and in the end the 77' Maverick won 1st. place and the Stallion won 2nd place. All in all, we had a really fun day just chatting with everyone about thier past Mavericks. I think a few may be looking to get one of thier own after today.:D

    Good living.

I guess you're living right, no one hurt, and nothing big on the cars. Now we just have to get every new person interested in a Maverick to read this thread and go after big bumper cars. They are definitely the way to go, maybe some people can get into them before they are all gone. Better hurry though.

PS. One part of this is serious.

I've said the same thing before. I was rear-ended in the 77 once, and it did no major damage to the car, though the bumper does have a bit of a bend in it now. As I continue the restoration on my 71, I think... God, I hope nobody hits me when this is done!! :)
