Tach's don't even connect to the transmission. They connect to your engine coil. Very easy installed. 4 wires, one for ground, one for the light inside it (if equipped) one for power, and one going to the coil.
tach idea I wanted a tach, and i hate idiot lights. so here is what i did, I removed the gauge cluster, bought a 2 1/2 inch tach, gutted the tach. next step, i got out a dremel and modified the left side of the gauge clutster, thereby sacrificing all idiot lights. then installed the tach in the gauge cluster. it fit very nicely just below the the gas gauge. it looks as if it is supposed to be there. i'll try to post a pic of this somewhere sometime. i only attempted this because i had an extra gauge cluster. I could probably give you or anyone else a walkthrough on this. or I might be able to make this mod for someone. for a small fee.
tachs I dont know anything about tachs but was wondering. Are tachs engine cylinder spacific. Like can you get a tach out of a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder Mustang and make it work on a V8 5.8L in a Maverick? Or do you have to get a V8 tach? Thanks. My name is Greg Henry. I live in Selah, Washington. I have 3 Mavericks a 64 Falcon Sprint, a 64 Mercury Comet Cyclone and a 73 Comet.
ghenry36, some of the tachs I've seen, have a switch on the back for the size engine you have. We should get together sometime. I have a 2 Mavericks & 2 73 Comets....Have you thought about joining the club? We have Mini Meets here in Wash....
Most tach's do have the switch as mentioned above. Im not sure about the factory tachs, but Im sure they have something like that also.
I have an old Sun Super Tach in our Maverick, and it says for 8 cylinders on the back and it seems to work fine... Just reads twice as slow as the engine is actually running. At 2,000 RPM it reads 1,000, ect. Gives me the ballpark at least of the RPM's we're running. I pulled the tach off the dash of a 57' Ranchaero that was drag raced all through the 70's up till the early 80's when the guy that raced it wrecked a 3 wheeler and got decapatated. http://5hp.hill.cc/hotrod/sunsupertach/
6 cylinder... It's a 74 Grabber with the 250. But it reads exactly twice as slow, checked it with a friends tach.
