...I need 'em. I finally figured out that damned popping sound in my front end, and that bit of pulling I get when I brake. I'd checked these things before and they looked new, but I guess I didn't check well enough. Maybe I should have tightened them. Anyway, I can see now at least one of them is chewed up, so I'm ready to get that dealt with.

I've read that I should not use poly bushings because some people have experienced broken strut rods that way, so I'm looking to order some rubber ones. I wanna say I've read somewhere that everybody is happy with the Moog ones? Any other brands I should consider or stay away from?

Also, it would be good to see a picture or description of how these are supposed to go together. I know it should be simple, but I suspect mine aren't assembled correctly.

    Thanks!

moog is a long time reputible brand for suspension parts. i dont have a pic or diagram but they go from the front to rear of the car in this order. nut, washer, rubber bushing, frame suport, rubber bushing, washer, nut. there is a sleve that goes through the center hole of the busheings and washers.

The washers are bowl-shaped... Do they belong facing toward or away from the bushings, or both? I assumed mine were in wrong because two of them are facing outward, but I've seen pictures that make me wonder.

im pretty sure that the bowl is susposed to cup the bushing. im not 100% on that. ive seen where the washer is flat and one side is beveled or rounded towards the edge. those you put the rounded side towards the bushing. the moog kit may have a diagram in it.

One does face outwards, on the washer they are marked, something like "Bushing side"
The front one faces out, the inside one (in the engine compartment) cups the bushing. I just looked at the 73, I just bought, and the front one says "This Side Out".

Weird. So there are a couple of ways it could be, and mine is currently neither (or both?)

My driver's side is set up like Dave described. Other side has the front most washer on the outside cupping the bushing, and the inside one facing away.

Maybe it depends upon the bushings? factory vs aftermarket (moog) ??

Maybe. I'm just surprised to see the two sides done differently. Surely that can't be right.

This is the order it goes, it took me awhile to figured it out.
http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=55695&page=2 look at pic2 thats how it goes, pic1 is the factory bushing that had a mushroom type for the front for centering and support, the new ones do not have that type and give you a metal center plate that does the same thing, only stronger.(y)

Make sure to get it aligned afterward. Thats where your Caster angle is adjusted.

So, now I'm back in town and can tackle the strut rod bushing thing... Anybody ever use Duralast bushings?

I also see Energy Suspension makes polyurethane, and I heard that breaks strut rods. What about polygraphite?

Ordered the Raybestos bushings from rockauto... Now, my spidey-sense tells me I should grease these things to keep them quiet. Thoughts?

dont grease them. the grease eats away the rubber. the polygraphite is just poly urithane with graphite imbeded in it to try to keep it quiet, so no dont use them on the strut rods. i have no idea on how good the raybestos or duralast bushings are. brands like those are usually reboxed other brands. raybestos make brake parts. they are considered a quality compay so they may even rebox moog suspension parts. i always use moog when i do bushings and ball joints.
