That's why I like the one piece main bearing girdle. caps and girdle are forged as a unit. Line bore it bolt it on. It gives you about 1/2" deeper sump because the rail is supported by the pan surface. That really stiffens up the bottom end.

Most times when a block lets loose they find that a crack starts at one of the main cap bolt holes and goes up through the main web and into the lifter valley. General consensus is that a main girdle will just hold together the pieces when the block splits so that some of the parts might be salvagable. So often guys will have their blocks machined for 4-bolt main caps only to find out that they just weakened more what was already a weak spot in the block. Sure wish I could afford a Dart block.

    That's a late model block...
    Very thin webbing.
You don't see a lot of early blocks do that.
Not that they won't, but it does take more to do it.

The guy was spraying nitrous when it happenend.
I wonder if the thing wasn't detonating...
Gas igniting when it isn't supposed to will push down on the crank when it is coming up. It was a 347 as well, so detonation would have had plenty of leverage and extra weight to work against the forward motion of the crank, and in turn blow it all apart.

I hate to say it, but the girdles w/ just hold the split two pieces together as you pull it out of the car...(y)
    Everything else is a gamble...:yikes:

:D The block is easier to lift into your trunk when it's in two pieces like that.
