Is it easier to just swap collars instead of the entire column when doing a column shift to floor shift conversion. It sure looks like alot of stuff to remove to take the collars off and on. Has anybody done it? Any tips?

    Thanks ...

You'll need snap ring pliers to remove/install the collars. I would say it would be the same degree of difficulty either way.

I swapped my upper collar years ago. Was pretty straight forward. Did not swap the lower collar, so I still have the holes where the shift indicator used to be, they are currently covered by the tach mounting clamp.

Anyone have a lower collar for sale?:D

We went from a floor mounted 4 speed to a automatic on the column. At the time our daughter was 16 {her car} and she needed to keep her mind on the road and not worry about shifting and or GRINDING all the gears. Mike

I think the collar is way more easier to change than the whole column. Everything can be done while sitting in the comfort of the drivers seat.

Not really. Last one I did was about 3 yrs ago. It all just unbolts, not a big deal.

So is it possible to find a lower collar without the holes? mine was changed from column to floor and it still has the holes from the old shifter up there. Pain in the butt to look at!
I was thinkin about getting a roll of duck tape and just wrappin around there real nice (y)

I always though of wrapping it with some thin gauge sheet metal and a couple of screws or pop rivits on the bottom. Once you paint it, no one will ever know.

I guess that would work too, but the tape would be easier!

i filled mine with bondo, looks pretty good IMO. was still able to keep it, so you have to start the car to be able to shift out of park.

Dan you will need to pull the turn signal switch and wiring out of the column. Tie a heavy string to the loom when you pull it out then you can use the string to pull it back through when you putting it back together.

Well I was looking at the pedal mount project yesterday. Since I need to swap the entire pedal/column support out to install the one with a clutch pedal I'm gonna have to remove the steering column anyway.
