Okay today upon reviewing tapes and photos of last night every launch my car threw about 1-2 gal of fuel on the track.. right out of the fill pipe and around the cap.. I only run less than 1/2 tank of fuel for weight reasons but was wondering if the pickup could be sucking air causing my stumble on hard takeoffs????

1-2 gallons is a LOT to "spill" Mine would on occasion burp out a little bit. I cut a gasket out of gasket material for the cap and solved that issue.

if your throwing 1-2 gallons of fuel onto the track they would've told you to fix it or not come back. that's a lot of fuel and very noticeable. you have a problem somewhere that needs to be addressed right away. also if you keep it near full the gas dosen't move around as much and will be more consistent and will keep the pickup under gas all the time. try it and maybe a new gas cap.:)

Ive had problems in the past trying to run 1/2 tank of gas, Yes the gas will move away from the pickup, especially if the pickup is old and part of the end has rusted off. I redone my stock pickup with a 1/2 inch pipe that reaches to the bottom of the tank, Although the orignal pickup location is not the best location for the pickup i try to be as stock looking as i can .I also never race unless my tank is full. ( i need the extra weight behind my rear tires)

scooper. check autozone online. i put in a 71 maverick and came up with this. 71 maverick locking fuel cap---part #5759. non locking---part # 6734. no one said it had to look pretty, just be functional.:)

These do work good, But if your stock vent has been closed off, and or used for a return, Be sure the cap will vent both ways, or youll be chasing a surge and running out of gas problem. I just drilled a small hole through the inside of the cap.

Also keep in mind that the 70 cap is different from the 71 and up caps.

my '73 cap was vented to the ...inside...it has a ...one way valve... to let air in but not out. that way it would vent to the ...charcoal canister.
when i put the return line on my EFI i had to grind the nipple off the inside of the cap and take the valve out. the return was put in the top of the tank where the vent was on the later tanks.

Not sure what the cap looked like for the California emissions. The one in the 70 picture is correct for cars without CA emissions though.
