Well My old Pioneer kept quitting on me and I gave up trying to find a good old am/fm cass. knob style to fit the bracket. They call those crappy old radios vintage now and want big money for a 25 year deck. Since I have 2 radio brackets I made the decision to cut one up. Scooped a Panasonic am/fm CD/MP3/ with Aux. for my Ipod. My buddy at work is scrapping a Sebring so I grabbed the deck out of it. Turned out pretty good. The display is even Blue as luck would have it. BYE-BYE old Pioneer. Hello 2 year old Panasonic W/remote What a difference in sound. No surprise there I guess.LOL.
When I got my car it had a very similar cassette, even was a Pioneer. It was one of the first things I removed. The rx had poor reception and it had poor quality audio. I was going to replace it anyway even if it had been working. I had long since got away from cassettes and switched to CD's. Im sure u'll be glad to part w/ the vintage rig if sound quality is ur goal. I know it was a gud move for me. BTW- The hole above the radio now has a hinged door to cover the unsightly opening.
My initial goal was to keep the retro radio. Just cant find a decent one for decent money. Not about to pay 50 dollars and up plus shipping for a crappy old radio. Wasnt really my goal to have good sound in the old girl but it sure sounds a ton better. Might as well get myself some decent front speakers now. The ones in my kick panels have pretty much had it. I came across some rears from a warranty job at work.
I've been thinking about doing that same thing. I have a factory AM/FM cassette in mine that came in my 84 pickup. It has no audio to speak of, if I didn't have a amp on it you could just barely hear it. And I don't have any cassettes any more, and very few CD's. Wish I could find a good digital AM/FM radio that would sound good. Don't really need a CD player either. For that matter, I seldom turn it on unless I'm stopped somewhere. I listen to the music of the dual exhaust!
i thought about one of these http://www.retrosoundusa.com/products/category/id/1 but there about $275 . I saw a cheap sanyo for $50 with two knobs. But that seems a little to cheap.
I plan to keep the stock AM radio for looks, then install a hidden "Secret Audio" system for the modern convenience. They sell for around $280.
