so my dad and i have recently gotten headers for our 74 mav and should have em installed by the end of the week but...
we were curious as to what stuff can be removed from the car that was put on the car for smog. because of the car being smog exempt we have been cutting some things out and plugging some stuff up but we need some extra guidance on everything that can be removed.
    the car is a '74 mav with a 250 inline 6

    pictures would help,
    thank you :bouncy:

I'm in the process of doing the same thing on a 77 model 250. The egr valve will be the first to go. I figure that I may make a block off plate if I have to.

I removed the vacuum operated duct valve on the air cleaner, door now stays open. Transmission Regulated Spark Control System from the air cleaner, Coolant Spark Control, Cold Temperature Activated Vacuum System locking relay on the firewall and 3-way valve that bolts to the valve cover, plugged the exhaust manifold where the EGR valve tube connects. The timing chain and gears were replaced with '69-'71 pre-emission timing gear for more aggressive valve timing and low end torque. The carbon canister doesn't hurt to leave it attached. All its doing other than being an eye sore is catching and burning the gas fumes from the gas tank

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
By the time i got mine half of the stuff had been removed already, like all the temp stuff, the delays, throttle solenoid, etc.... to finish it off i took off the air pump, and catalytic converter.

just removing the air pump it felt like i gained 5 HP :drive:

good thing 1975 is the last year for smog exemption in california :)

Swapping over to a DurasparkII feels like 7-10 hp gain also

I guess mine has had a bunch already removed. About all that's left is the egr valve, a bunch of vacuum hoses, a valve or two and the themal valve. Of course I did put it in a 70 model car so no canisters and such.

This weekend I noticed that at an idle, the air cleaner was shaking really bad...but it was tight. I found that the carb was bad loose. Not to the intake but the carb itself. I don't even see how it was running. I got a kit so when when I rebuild the carb, I'll take off everything that isn't needed.

I took everything off. Only vacuum lines I now have are vacuum advance and PCV.

    Just a quick note:
It is a federal offense to remove, disable or replace any emission control devices with any device not approved by the manufacturer or fitting the orginial purpose of the original parts.
There is a $50000 federal fine for disabling or removing any emission control device.
Note 2: Federal law supercedes any lesser state or local law.

I am not saying that you cannot do this but perhaps advertising that you are or have broken the law is not the best thing to do.

^ there's a law here that allows you to remove stuff on smog exempt cars if the part is inoperable or defective.

    thank god for sema :)

But he said FEDERAL LAW SUPERCEDES ALL STATE AND LOCAL LAWS!!!

That is fine, this ENGINE didn't have any of that stuff. So when all that smog stuff came out attached to the old engine, I just put the new engine in with all of it's smog stuff attached. Luckily, it didn't have any.

I just finished my most recent Hot Rod magazine. I really enjoyed looking at all the EGR and smog pump stuff ALL THOSE GUYS HAVE ON THEIR CARS!!!

I may be advertising and inviting a stay at federal penitentiary, but at least I am not having it posted in magazine print.

But who knows, maybe the Maverick Forum gets more views than Hot Rod Magazine, so my pics will DEFINITELY be seen by the feds. And since you guys have brought the word "marijuana" into the thread, it will most definitely get picked up by the snoopers...

If I don't post tomorrow, you guys will know why...
