we have a small water leak, look like where the timing chain cover meets the block. it was patched up (by the seller) when we bought it (a few weeks ago). he told us it needed a new cover. based on the attached pics, any advice or tips on what we should do. thanks a lot! joe
You need a new gasket and replace the front seal while your at it, hell might want to install a new pump too, the cost of the parts are not that bad, can you do the work yourself?
I had one of these problems....turned out to be only the t-stat housing. Look closely at yours . Have your cooling system pressure tested...should show up. Let us know???
if it's the cover leaking, the only good way to fix it is to do it right and pull it apart, clean it up, new gaskets and reseal it. check to see if the cover needs to be replaced. they usully just need to be cleaned up. good luck.
The timing chain cover is made from aluminum and there is a water jacket going through the area you have the arrow. You're gonna have to pull the cover off which means water pump and all. I'm betting the water jacket inside the timing cover is going to be eat up and has probably gotten paper thin close to the block. The rusty water means no antifreeze in a while. If that's the case, might as well replace it. Anything else is just gonna be a temporary fix. Like the other guys said, might as well replace the water pump since you'll have it off too (preventive maintenance). You're also going to have the timing chain exposed...mighty cheap if it's got a lot of miles on it. I'd replace the heck out of it too. Here's what I figure you'll need: timing chain cover timing chain gasket set timing chain water pump thermostat & gasket permatex gasket sealant or equivalent anti-freeze six-pack of your choice 3-4 hours to blow Good luck and have fun! Man, I sure do like spending other peoples money!
thanks to everyone!! i live in orange county california (southern california) thanks for all your advise, i really appreciate it. i'm going to print out the advice you guys have given me and work on it with my buddy who happens to be a mechanic. joe
Personelly, getting the timming cover back on with the oil pan in place is a royal pain in the ass. I would also drop the pan. Its pretty easy to do.
right! when i see that, the first thing i do is check the thermostat! and about 100% the time thats what it was! so i'd just double check to see if under the thermostat is wet personally i have never had a timing chain cover leak b4.. maybe i ahve been lucky cuz my car leaks every where else! lol! but if it really is the timing chain cover thats cracked and is not the gasket.. i'd JB Weld it until you get the cash to repair it. That crap seals anything!
