i have a chance to buy a small block c-6 for my maverick what modifications if any will i have to do to get it working in my car? Thanks, Justin
I think you need to provide more information. List as many pertinent details as practical - that way, most of the time won't be spent on people asking you questions. A lot of people that can help you won't reply to a similar post - it's gets tiring after a while. I hope you don't take offense to my comments - just trying to help you (and other people who read this thread) get the requested information. Good luck, Rick
Ok here's a question that you might not put in your reply. WHY do you want to use a C-6 in your Maverick instead of a C-4? It's not any stonger then a well build C-4 Terry Gates AKA Bossmav
i can buy the small block c-6 for 50 bucks from the guy and he hadit gone through about a year ago, he had it in his mustang but is now swapping to a manual, as far as pertinent info goes, all i want to know is will it fit without modifications? cross member? driveline? stuff like that, thanks for any info
C-4 vs C-6? Measure the overall length of your C-4 (tailshaft included) and compare it to the overall length of the C-6. If they measure the same, you shouldn't have to change anything. Trans mounts should be the same. Driveshaft yoke may or may not be different. Nothing is ever certain. Parts get mixed & matched here & there over the years. Make sure about the length, that your driveshaft yoke is the same as needed for the C-6, and that the C-6 comes with a good converter or that it has the same spline count as your C-4 converter does. Nothing is ever carved in stone. Too many times things that "will bolt right up" - DON'T. The C-6 has long been considered to be stronger than a C-4. However, these days there are parts available that make the C-4 just as strong. The C-6 has more parasitic drag (it eats up horsepower) than the C-4 and it weighs more than the C-4. Because of this, the C-4 is probably the better choice - especially behind a small block. If that's not the answer you want, then: "yes, it will bolt right up." Do want you want - it is only 50 bucks!
There will be several issues to address, the floor tunnel will have to be modified, flex plate, converter and exhaust clearance etc. From experience, stick with a good C4--26spline input and a H or R servo. Weight and size do not make for a good swap in the Mav's. Henry's engineers made a good C6, but for heavy duty applications like trucks and some later heavy weight cars etc. Buy the thing and store it away, they are getting hard to find in some area's. Just for info, I buy many C4's out of local scrap yards for 20 to 25 dollars. The rebuild costs about 75 to 80 dollars for parts. We have drag raced and pounded on some of these little devils for many years and they perform well with little trouble, some mod's have to be made to them but still basically use stock stuff, if you are going to push over 350 to 400HP then a different modification to the C4 will have to be made. I know some cars running 514ci motors run them with confidence. The C6 will bolt up to the engine but everything else is a real challange to make it work in the Mav.
Header clearance I have also seen problems with headers clearing the small block C-6 in a Comet/Maverick. I don't know if that is true with all brands, but at least in the case I assisted in. Stay away from the iron case FMX also. That is a heavy son-of-a-gun to deal with. Seth
Move the transmission mount back 6 inches (not fun )or make some funky adaptor . Use a flexplate off of a windsor or Cleveland ( not sure about cleveland as I never tried it but have been told ) Shorten the driveshaft with the correct end or cut one down from a full size car if you can find one . Headers run pretty close to the tranny so some massaging of headers will probably be necesary You can use the stock shifter but have to play around with the length of the shifter lever on the transmission to get all of the indents lined up with the indents on the shifter. You can butch in a c6 neutral saftey switch but I would try the orginal c4 one if you have one first. C6 trannies will take all kinds of punishment up to about 650 HP stock but are heavier and take about 15 hp more to turn when loaded up with clutches . You can run reduce drag in them by using only 3 clutches in the forward , high reverse and low clutch packs If you are going to go racing and buy a convertor for it (1000 USD) SERIOUSLY consider using a C4 before going thru with it . I have ran C6s for 15 years in a 71 comet with no failures but 15 years ago there were not any serious perf parts for C4 's
