When I hit the gas quickly on my 70 maverick it hesitates then speeds up and sometimes it shuts off all together when I hit the gas quickly. sometimes it will randomly shut off while I'm slowing down. I have a 200 inline 6 and I was wandering what the problem may be and what I can do to fix it, thanks.

First thing I'd check would be the fuel filter. Could be when you hit the gas it sucks it down quickly then starves til the fuel catches back up.:)

You shouldnt be driving that fast in the first place :D after 65mph your fuel economy takes a hit.

It's not when I'm driving fast, It's when I hit the gas all the way.

No haha I do usually drive pretty fast but it only shuts off if I hit the gas hard from a stop or if I'm slowin down.

Sounds like an accelerator pump issue or a vacuum leak

The problem could be in the tune or the accelerator pump in the carb. Start by making sure all the adjustments are correct - idle speed, timing, idle mixture, etc. if that doesn't fix it then look at the accelerator pump linkage - you can sometimes increase the stroke and adjust it so there is no gap (it moves as soon as the throttle does). It might be that the pump is worn and needs to be replaced or that the shooter size (the pump nozzel) is too small. You can use number drills to increase the size one step at a time until it works. Find a drill that fit the hole and use the next size up. Don't use standard drills for this - use only number drills.

Mine does the same thing. Along with not idling nice... I'll try a new fuel filter for fun.

Hard fixing things when I don't know anything about engines haha. I had to use the old Carter carburetor manual that someone scanned online to set the idle the other day. Guess the cold today messed it up since it was back to it's old tricks. I figure it's finally time I learned how to do some of this stuff myself; I've had the car for 10 years.

I suggest you get a Chilton's Repair and Tune-up Guide at your local parts store or from an on-line source. I have the 1970-77 guide and it contains information about every major system in the vehicle as well as specs, disassembly guides and assembly information. It is a great way to learn how to take care of your car.
(it also has pictures to help guide you)

Check timing first,,,If that's alright then more than likely it's the accelerator pump for the hesitation but there might also be a dashpot on that carb which is supposed to prevent the throttle plate from snapping closed when you let off the gas which might be causing the stalling when slowing down

I think I fixed the stalling out when I put the pedal to the metal. The screws holding the two halves of the carb together were a bit loose and tightening seems to have fixed that problem. There was some gas leaking out between the gasket.

Still can't get it to idle nicely. It still wants to cut out when I put it in gear or actually get it to idle at low speed. It is definitely in need of a rebuild so we're gonna take it to a local guy asap. The engine also has a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. That explains why it is so dang hot while messing with the idle screws. >.>
