I have a 71 so I didn't have retractable seat belt. Wondering if anyone has used anything aftermarket that's not too pricey and a decent fit.

My seat belts are shot. I prefer something retractable or at least a little more compact. I have upgraded to 66 mustang seats so need something that'll look good with this setup.

i think that you could put some seat belts out of a 80-90s car that bolt into similar locations that the mavericks bolt to. i think fox mustang belt would be really close to fitting.

    Dennis,

Thanks for posting that link ... they have a nice how-to section showing a standard and a custom install in a 70 Mustang.

I will be tackling this soon myself. :thumbs2:

    Hi Guys,

Mikey and I just installed the Juliano's belts in the '72 Comet last weekend. We used the stock mounting holes. The car has bucket seats.

I feel a lot safer with these new belts installed. The inertia lock is very sensitive. You cannot put the belts on quickly; they will lock if you pull too fast.

I don't like the way the shoulder belt rubs against my neck. That's because I have the front seat all the way back. In newer vehicles you can adjust the height of the shoulder belt. I s'pose if one had the seat farther forward the angle would be better and the belt would cross over the body at a lower spot. This isn't a knock on the belts, the stock ones would be the same as they have the same mounting locations.

We have the side panels off so I don't know how the retracting mechanism will fit. Pictures when I get back to the car this weekend.

Have a look at these from Andover. http://www.andoauto.com/SBL8-1.htm Scroll down the page to the ones with the 8 1/2" door post extension. It drops the shoulder pivot down so it doesn't rub your neck so much. I put on the factory shoulder belt one time, and I hated it. This is much better. I still think I am going to order and weld in a new shoulder anchor in front of the post where it is on a 77, as it is still not as comfortable as the ones in my 77 were with the anchor there. Just like the Juliano's ones, the inertial locks are VERY sensitive... you have to pull them out s.l.o.w.l.y. :D

I tried to install the stiff-arm buckles like the Juliano's howto shows, but it just didn't work like they showed. I think the Mustang mounting area is raised up more than the Maverick's because I could not get it far enough out so the plastic housing cleared the tunnel. I ended up taking the plastic casing off and for now I'm just hanging them over the tunnel when I'm not wearing them.

The thing on these, they will mount using the factory hardware, but if you want to do it differently, rememer to order all of the hardware or a hardware kit, because the online store doesn't group the belts as a kit, you order each piece separately.

I'm gonna try to find something out of an older car. Autolok and Julianos seem to make decent aftermarket seatbelts if that doesn't work out.

So Bryant, where in SD can I find some junk yards to rummage through?

in the junkyards, if you find the later model mav (74 on) ones their bolt in. you can also use ones out of a later model VW beetle...hehe.

If you're saying you can take later 3 points and just "bolt them in" I think you're mistaken. The later ones have a housing that is recessed in the rocker panel and the shoulder mounting point is further forward. The recessed part is molded around the rear seat surround extension as well.

My front seat belts came from an old Nissan of some type. Pulsar maybe. They work fine, but for cosmetic reasons I went plundering Pull-A-Part for some others. Did a lot of looking and was surprised at how many of them are not good candidates. I found that later first generation S10 Blazers, GMC Jimmys and Olds Bravadas, say '91-'94ish, should be able to bolt on in the stock locations. I couldn't get them out before the yard closed so I've yet to try them, but I will eventually.

My rear seatbelts are also retractable. They came from a '72 LTD and bolted in just fine. The retract mechanism is hidden under the seat.

Well if you look at the later belts they retract into a housing (roll up) which sits in a housing that goes from the inside of the rocker to the outside (it's about 3 inches deep at least) so while yes you could certainly "make it fit" by drilling a rectangular section out of your carpet and inner rocker and then getting something like a flange or housing to blend it in you would also have to change the anchor point for the shoulder harness (I can't see it reaching the early model anchor point) which would mean having a new and an old hole in your headliner, which of course you would need to take out the headliner to properly put in...Much easier to go aftermarket I think....
