Some one told me that even if i opened up my sccops that wouldnt do any good because of were they are positioned and that there just there for looks
Yes That is true. I opened mine up anyway and put some black mesh in there for that TOUGH look. It may help a little cooling the engine bay down. If you want a true Ram air system They make after market kits by Ram AIr Box something or another. However if you have a stock motor I would not waste the money until you need it. Also be wary if you have a Big style Ford or aftermarket distributor as the kits will not fot at all or will need some mods.......Good Luck
I opened up the scoops for looks and with the stock suspension you get a nice veiw of the top of the shocks. We have sence change to mustang II and with the towers removed I was able to close off the back half of the hood with a little aluminum sheet metal fabricating. I sealed that to a custom made air cleaner, similar to the 71-73 mustang without the snorkle. I doubt if we are getting alot of positive pressure but we are getting fresh air to the carb. You would be supprised at all the stuff that gets in there (bugs, sticks, grass, dust, and small rocks) I can post some pictures if you are intrested in what we did.
All I have to say is that Thomas Hackermann's Maverick RULES (and I STILL want some of those taillights)...
Yes! Tammy's car is AWESOME! Even better in person> I cannot wait to see Thomas's when he gets it done! How is your maverick coming?
Thomas; Great shots of your ram air. Thanks. I was thinking of asking you for similar info too. In fact, I'd aquired a second set of scoop inserts from a crash car (folded up hood, but inserts survived) to be able to alternate between open or closed if I wanted to. Is it possible that you can provide any more details on your breather assembly? Do you remember what the pieces were from, and any special mods you did to them? One last question; do you have any kind of cable (or other) activated device to seal your openings off in inclement weather? (let me guess; you don't drive it in inclement weather?) Thanks for any help you can provide. John B.
Thanks for the praise, as John keeps saying it's tammy's car and I am currently working on one for me. At this time the detail must stay a secret I should have some pictures by Oct. The scoop work: I started with a aluminum sheet 2024-t3 .050 thick, made a pattern from cardboard that would fit the hood and cut the aluminum then put a small bend front and back. The hood was off the car so it was easy to do. sence the hood flexes a little I used rubber to seal the front portion and I also have small bubber flaps near the hinges for water excape in thoery. The air cleaner is a 14" offset base with a K&N filter I bought from the local speed shop. I made a 18" circle out of 16 ga steel and cut a 13.5" circle inside that one. then welded that to the 14" air cleaner base. Then I made a 3"x18" circle (like a tube) and welded that to the new base, that's what the hood seal mounts to. With the hood back on I used clay to find the air cleaner and cut the hole on the hood box. Using the clay again on the outer edge of the air cleaner base, I kept triming the edge intell only the seal will touch the hood box. The hood is on a different plane than the engine so the front of the air cleaner is lower than the rear. The seal is from a aircraft excape hatch, I think you could use the one fron the 71-73 mustang. As for weather we don't have that here in California.....LOL I can say we hit some heavy rain going to last years round-up and had no problems, I thought for sure the car was going to die but it never did. I don't know where the water went or we just didn't get enough to kill the engine. So I have no provisions for bad weather.
It was so cool seeing a west coast car, they have ALOT of "trick ideals out there. Thomas is a true genius when it comes to "resoto-moding" a maverick!
Thomas; A big thanks for taking the time to provide that nicely detailed answer. All the best to you. John B.
Hey Thomas, with your fabrication skills, you should try to get on one of Jessie James' build teams on Monster Garage.
