On The Discovery Channel's new series Fast N' Loud, a pair of guys from the "Gas Monkey" garage hunt down and buy old cars, then fix them up to flip 'em for profit (hopefully) at auction. In this episode, they were crawling over piles of parts at a junkyard, hunting for a project, when they found an old Maverick, pretty banged up and missing a door, the lead guy affectionately commented about driving one in high school, how fun it was and how much he likes them. It's too bad the Maverick was too far gone for them pick as a project. I like the show.....I think there's only been 3 or 4 episodes, and the guys lost their ass in two, so it's not all glossy build-and-make-$$ every time show like so many others. .
of course, it it "TV'd up" ... real life is a bit boring ... they got poke it and prod it a bit to keep it moving. At least this give a flavor of some things that might have really happened. Kind of like bench racing.... what they do with some of the cars is interesting. That gasser project they did was wrong though ... they really needed to build and letter that thing "period correct" on all counts .... that car was not it. I wanted to see it hand-painted by a sign painter and crusty old hardware that was correct. It was slapped back together. Real life would look a bit more like "Chop, Cut, Rebuild", except slower ... not a bad show ... I catch it from time to time. I am definitely NOT watching any more episodes of Barter Kings ... that is just insultingly staged.
...what age crowd are they targeting anyway... Mike and I were talking about shows like this...(building...cars, bikes, houses, redoing houses) they all have a deadline and the drama leading up to..."are they going to make it". they always do...
That Dan Woods guy is from around here, the first season was all done here in Canada. (he's a sell out!) He use to be on a horrible show called "Degrassi Junior High"
OK ... finally caught the end of the episode of Fast and Loud on the dvr. The heavyset guy in the garage was lowering the Galaxie ... he offically wins the dumbazz award ... removed the spring without a compressor ... and demonstrates for the cameraman ... who is clearly in the flight path of the spring .. how " the violence of the spring" pushes the spindle and ball joint apart ... as they both watch it pop out of place. Somebody there needs a smack in the head ... with something a bit softer than a coil spring.... setting a very bad example for some backyard mechanics out there.
