These are th type I just found in my shop new in the box/covered in dust Are they safe to use? Never really worked with springs much but if I keep these opposite from each other will I survive the swap?
Scary to use any kind of spring compressor, I have tried using that type and quit because they kept trying to move around on spring. Perhaps if you put some hose clamps were they connect to spring it will keep them in place
I am thinking they won't work. These seem smaller than the ones I have seen so I could be wrong. The ones like these I have seen don't work because there is not enough room for the screw drives to go up before hitting against the top. A trick I learned from an old guy was to put a chain through the coils before squeezing them. That way if it lets go it can help catch it.
I was not able to keep them from walking, and also had a difficult time moving the spring into position with those hanging on the sides.
I couldn't get that type of spring compressor to work on mine properly, to work properly the have to be opposite each other and there isn't enough room in the shock tower to get them on. I did get 1 spring out with those but, they slid and the decompressed on 1 side as I was removing it and it hit me in the knee, luckily I had a chain on it so it wasn't worse. You need to get an inside spring compressor.
yup. use an inside. i launched one out of a 64 fairlane once with the outside strut compressor type failing. heres the type i used. advance auto had available for loaner.
I started to use a set of those but didn't feel safe so took them off. used these from Advance Auto... http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=91226&page=2
I`ll have to admit using them makes me nervous, the inner ones work the best.I`ve put a set of 175s in my Mav race car & a set of stockers in a 63 Impala the last 6 mnths, not a lot of fun. Some cars like the Impala don`t have enough room in there to use a chain for safety & you know if it lets go or something breaks you only hope that you can get out of the way.
The two pc ones are for coil over springs, get a good one that gos inside the spring... I built a compressor from plans on line, mine takes the place of the shock and removes the spring and spring perch at the same time.. Only one I felt safe with...
any chance you still got the plans for that one? may as well build something that will work good for my car & be safe
or you can purchase one from eBay........... http://www.ebay.com/itm/65-73-Mustang-Shelby-Maverick-Coil-Spring-Compressor-/261195370724?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cd07510e4&forcev4exp=true I purchased items from Tom before, high quality stuff!
http://dazed.home.bresnan.net/spring This is the one I built, It takes a little longer to use but very safe...
That is about the safest type that I have seen so far. The ones that either go on the outside or the inside are both real crap shoots if they are going to stay there or not
