the situation: (250... 1972 all stock) runs great. normal gas mileage. but when i come to a stop, the engine shakes almost like it is running on 5 cyls. then the idle improves and smoothes out. so far i can tell you that: carb is a lil over a year old. plugs, cap rotor and wires are fresh. also thinking vacuumleak i went with new gaskets for the carb to manifold. tinkered with the mixture and timing. pcv is also fresh. even did a "gunk" engine flush thinking sticky lifter. i know it has to be something easy that i am overlooking... any other ideas? anybody else "been there done that?" thanks
How are the floats on those carbs set up? Sounds like how a v-8 does if the floats are too high, causes extra fuel to overflow into the ventura and flood the engine. Once it burns the extra fuel out it clears up. clint
If you have a bracket for a dashpot..I think that would help. A dashpot keeps the butterflys from "slamming shut" when you let off the gas....which could be your problem. The dashpot "eases" the plates shut. P.S. By "shut" I don't mean 100% of the way...as the butterfly are open just a sckoshe when at idle.
sckoshe? Craig-I had to look that one up. skosh ( P ) Pronunciation Key (sksh) n. Slang A small amount; a bit: “This is a well-plotted, economical thriller. Although the beginning is a skosh slow, [the author] picks up the pace” (T. Jefferson Parker). Here in NC we call that a smidgen. smid·gen also smid·geon or smid·gin ( P ) Pronunciation Key (smjn) n. A very small quantity or portion; a bit or mite: “a smidgen of genius, a sliver of cutting truth” (John Simon).
uhhhh i did forget to add i have a pertronix so i know it ain't the points....think i'll check the needle and float. i sprayed carb cleaner around the intake places checking for vacuum leaks with no real change in the idle. maybe i sould invest in a vacuum guage... as always, thanks for all the input.
