Got a problem recently with my 302 starting to have a rough idle problem; it idles now as though I have a vacuum leak somewhere; at low rpm it really runs terrible; of course I am still running with points/condenser; I checked my plugs and noticed a couple of cylinders were very rich (black) when I pulled out the plugs; I changed my points/condenser; regapped; ck wires, distributor and retimed to 6 BTC.........still runs as though the engine is not in time with carb. (edelbrock 4 barrel) help me out guys if possible; had to stop for a while; getting pretty mad; car has been running pretty good up until a week ago; seems like the "missing" problem got worse...I will be going to electronic ignition soon also.........thanks jdogmav
Some things to look for. Is there any black smoke from the exhaust, is the carb flooding over ( in the throttle bores) at idle, any vacuum lines off etc.
thanks for the tips; if I get on it hard, then I do get black smoke; I've checked all vaccum lines; will ck carb. for flooding at idle...
sounds rich although i wouldnt rule out ignition or possible other problems, its probably running rich. just curious, is your edelbrock a 500 or 600 cfm? ive got a 500 cfm on my "bone-stocker", and ive had absolutely no carburetor problems at all. the great thing about edelbrock carbs is they are so easy to tune. for most applications, be sure that the accelerator pump is in the middle hole. and you might want to buy an edelbrock "strip kit". metering rods can be changed in a couple of minutes time, without taking your carburetor apart. it sounds like you need a fatter metering rod in you primary jets, to lean your carb out a bit. that may keep the carb from loading up at idle.
found the problem (rough idle) Ford fans, found the problem with my 72 V8 rough idle and richness problem; I pulled out my metering rods and realized that one of them would not come out until i removed the top of the carb. edelbrock 1406; had a bent metering rod.....changed to larger rods and car runs once again like a champ! thanks for all the inputs; jdogmav "if it ain't steel, it ain't real"
