have a 1974 Maverick with the 200cc L6 and a one barrel carb. It has been running rough, with black smoke at idle. I have changed out fuel filter, new plugs, plug wires and have had a couple of friendly neighbor mechanics try to adjust carb. No luck. what else can it be? Car has 19,000 actual miles on it. aubman82@charter.net
I'd rebuild the carb and see what that does. Black smoke means it's running very rich in my experience.
black smoke is running rich. carb probably needs adjusting. if it can't be corrected either get another carb or like jamie said try to rebuild it.
Hey i had the same problem. I had a bad carb. it was rebuilt twice and i found out eventhough you rebuild it. It may still give you some problems. Also, check your spacers, i had a broken space inbetween the engine and my carb, and it spit out black exhaust because we set the carb to counter the air. But we put on a new spacer and adjusted the new carb and it work like a charm.
