Hi, I just came in from the driveway b/c i'm stuck. I'm trying to remove the steering colunm from my mav. Its almost all disconnected. I just cant seem to figure out how to separate the tranny linkage from the base of the column. It seems to be pressed through a plastic retainer. any suggestions?
    Thank you, Dan

    Enlighten me?

Ok, I'll be swapping out my steering column in the future so I wanted to know any problems you ran into during the swap.

    The little plastic retainers...

The way I have removed them in the past is to heat them up with a paint stripper gun. This makes them plyable. Then when there good and hot pry off the link.

Anyone, If there is a more civilized way, let me know.
This is the only way I know of. Mark

This is the reply I got from Old Guy:

"Ford has a special tool that looks like a pair of slip joint pliers with vise grip slotted jaws on top and bottom and an adjustable bolt on top. They press the rod out of the bushing and then you have to cut the bushing out of the lever and install the new one on the rod and use the bolt device as a gage and install back into lever. Just force the rod out with vise grips or ?? and reinsert with small hole drilled for cotter pin etc, to use the old bushing over if it's good shape.

I Used the Vise Grip method and it woked out fine.
