Was at a junkyard today and found a 72 mav with nice front and rear glass trim but I didn't know how to properly remove them without damaging them. How do you do it?
http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=30089 There is a picture of the tool around post #8 or 10. I will hotlink it here.
Gene, since you are in Arizona, that will work to your benefit. The clips release much easier when the temperature is quite warm as it softens the window sealer the clips are often buried in. If you would be trying to do this in the north right now you would find it next to impossible unless the car were in a well heated shop. Use the tool to release the clip and never pry on the trim itself or you will dent it. A lot depends on how much sealer was used to assemble the glass. Sometimes it can be very hard to even find the clips. Other times they just pop right off. Hope this helps ..............
Thanks for all the tips...I really would like to snag this trim if not for me for someone else that might need it.
Take your time.. That's basically the only tips I can give.. It does get frustrating if it has been filled with butyl, just don't force it
If you can get them I would. You can buy repoped clips but from the feedback I hear the OEM ones are better.
Wear leather gloves. I removed 4 or 5 sets of trim from a junkyard once, and I had no knuckles left on the hand I used the tool with. The rocking motion will scrape your fingers against the glass. And old dirty glass is NOT smooth.
If you decide to get the clips also, PB Blaster cleans them up nicely, it will also get the butyl off of your hands and the trim.
Grab as many of the clips as you can, and if the car is still original, make note of any green clips, which might be in the corners, where all the others will be yellow.
When you reinstall them on your car, do not skip any clips, or you will lose a piece of trim at 65 mph. Wanna know how I know? That is why I grabbed 5 sets of trim when I had access to them.
