well if the motor is pulled from the car take one of the bolts on the flywheel and back it out about half-way enough so you can take a wrench and hold it on a bolt across from the one you backed out then ( if you have another person there) have a breaker bar on that wrench if you have no one to help there you can turn the engine over till the breaker bar on the ground and then have another breaker bar on the bolt on the harmonic balancer then you will be able to loosen the center bolt but leave it in the threads so when you use a puller you dont damage the threads. i hope this helps this is how i took mine out

Do any of the holes go all the way through the flywheel, if so you could stick something through it and it would jam up on back side of block, or you could pull a spark plug and stick some rope in the hole so the piston will act as a stop. Impact wrench would be the easiest though

If the guide pin is still in the block you can put a prybar into fly-wheel teeth and against guide pin to hold crankshaft as you crank down on your puller bolt (additional person would be helpfull!) If you want i could stop by and help. of corse it will be first of Nov. before i'll be through Alabama!:beerchug:

take some very clean soft rope and incert a foot of it in the sparkplug hole on a piston on compression stroke. then roatate the engine till the pistin pushes the very clean soft rope against the head. this will lock up the engine.

be very sure the rope is soft and clean.

We have a winner here. This is the most effective, safest way to hold backup on the flywheel. All those prybar methods posted usually end up with something broken or busted (knuckles)

Tip #1: Remove the center bolt before you try to pull the balancer off. :16suspect :D

Tip #2: Reinstall the bolt so the puller pushes on the bolt head but don't screw it in so far that the balancer contacts it before it comes free.

Tip #3: Shouldn't take much force turning the puller bolt to remove the balancer.
