If I were to remove these pieces to clean and repaint there wouldn't be anything special to do to put them back on the 250 would there? Other than a oil pan gasket?
alright so it is just a simple un-bolt and rebolt operation with the exception of the gaskets? Thats what I was hoping for. It is waaaay to difficult to clean and repaint those parts while still on the vehicle.
YOu'll need a puller for the harmonic balancer. When reassembling, be sure to put sealer on any bolt that goes into the water jacket and lubricate the front seal. would be good idea to pick up a repair manual of some kind to guide you if you haven't done it before.
Gotta install timing chain cover before oil pan. It's the only way to get the chain snubber block back on. Torque down the balancer before the TC cover. Might as well change the timing chain while you're in there. Might as well swap to a pre-emission gear set too for move advance (7degrees) valve timing. This will give you better performance and gas mileage. http://1bad6t.com/Maverick/repair/engine_repair_06.html
I understand most of what your saying other than switching to a pre-emission "ger set"? What is that exactly?
If you're going to be doing your own work on the car the Ford manuals are a good investment. You can find them on ebay. Otherwise, check your local auto parts store for a Chilton's or Haynes.
Ford retarded the 250's cam timing in '72 for better emission numbers. This cause less power and less MPG. By using the '69-'71 you will advance the valve timing...(not to be confused with ignition timing.) This will give you more bottom end power. If you compare early and later cam gears you will notice the keyway in the early gear is 7 degrees more clockwise than the later gear. Stock cam gears for the emission years are timed differently than the pre-emission years.
I blame that on keyboard era. I distinctly remember hitting the “A” key after hitting the “E” key. I know I did…I was sitting right here where I’m sitting now. Because I hit the "R" key afterwards.
Any '69-'71 250 will have advanced timing. Napa Cam Gear part number S414 Napa Crank Gear P/N B415 Napa Timing Chain P/N 9-363 I wonder if the word "pre-retarded" will ever be searched? ...now I wondering how many people will go search this word?
isn't that an....Oxymoron...or double negative...or something... ...will the timing be what it was before it was retarted... if that's true, then all you need is a stock "ger"...
