Well this is a pretty noobish question but when people are talking about having 8 or 9" rear what does that mean and what is the difference? thanks

Welcome to the board. The 8 and 9 inch rears have to do with the size of the ring and pinion gears inside the rear end. They are two different rear ends. Your 74 Maverick came with an 8". These can be used up to about 400 HP. After that a 9" should be used or an aftermarket rear. These are getting harder to find. :)

I happen to have a 9 inch in my Maverick but I was very lucky to find one years ago cheap. Now a days they are getting really scarce and I'm sure that the 8 inch is just as good, unless you are building tons and tons of horsepower. :yup:
