OK I'm basically trying to get any and all ideas of what could cause a noise coming from my 9" rear end on my Maverick. Here's the situation I can be driving and then all of a sudden then this clanking and clunking sound coming from the drivers side wheel area. It's not consistent enough to be something in the rear end itself...is it? I thought maybe warped drums had them checked and honed and still have the issue. Next step I was thinking was just replacing (even though they look fine aside from couple "scrape" marks) the shoes and the hardware. Any ideas would help at this point I'm just trying to narrow down and fix the problem. I know I haven't been very specific but honestly it's hard to describe and not consistent enough to understand (least for me..lol).

    Thanks in advance!

Is it when you are turning? Do you have traction-lok? Are you sure it's a 9"?

When next you hear this noise try slowing down, roll down your window and listen to hear if the noise slows down with your speed. This might tell you if it is a stickily rotating noise maybe related to the drums or not.

    No traction lock...and it's when I'm just going straight down a road that I randomly hear the noise...and yes it's a 9"

sometime the noise is real loud and other times you hear nothing as you drive....ive driven it few miles and would here the sound randomly...I mean sometimes it would make the sound continuously then stop and I would hear anything for a little while....I check all the brake hardware and it's tight and in good shape nothing loose but it sounds as though the shoes has jjust came apart in the drum but it hasn't just that clanking and clunking sound

Block the wheels up real good, jack up the rear of the car a bit and take the driveshaft where it bolts to the rear end and turn it back and forth to see if you can hear that "clunk" or at least see how much play you have in the pinion. Another thing you are looking for is up and down motion out of your yoke. You want no motion but maybe your pinion bearing is a giving you a problem.

no up and down motion but I do have a decent amount of play when rotating the driveshaft back and forth at least

Another thing to try is to jack up your drivers side rear wheel and spin it. Maybe find your noise that way or at least see if you have any wobble in your axle bearing. Your description of the noise as being "clanking and clunking" seems like it wouldn't take much to find out where it is coming from :tiphat:

tried that bc I thought it was wheel bearing possibly but no play there on either the horizontal or vertical plane...when spinning the tire by hand I get nothing out of it sound wise...bout to take it out on another short run and see if there's anything else I can say or describe...like trying to figure more accurately when it's doing it I know it has to be driven so the weight or the car is factoring in somewhere either with the driveline and rear end itself or with the braking system

Any chance the driveshaft is contacting the trans tunnel? (old springs/different offset of the pinion)
