It's really cool reading about all these great rear end jobs every ones doing to their Mav's. John B.'s about to have a nine incher that's sure to handle anything he throws at it. That's assuming he looses all that horse robbing rotational weight. Now Blown76Mav may be able to blow his 9"er up once he gets that blower installed. But I'm interested in using the eight incher that came with my car originally. Also, I'm not one of these guys that has just a whole lot of cash to drop into the car. What I'm thinking is, using parts that can be found at the salvage yard. Now I realize, sometimes, when you go this route that you end up spending more money than you originally intended, but I've had great success in the past using factory parts on many cars I've had in the past. I'm wanting to come up with a list of cars that used the eight incher and what gear ratios were available with those cars. Also, some of those cars came with traction lock. I'm going to need to know which cars had that as an option or maybe if certain cars more often than not had traction lock. Now I've heard that most '74 Mustang II's and Pinto wagons had eight inch rear ends and most of them coming with a gear ratio of 3.25 and higher. That would be a great improvement over my 2.79's. Then adding more improvement some of those were traction lock rear ends. What a great swap. Problem is, those cars are getting pretty hard to find. So I guess what I'm getting at is, we need to know how to break down the option tags on these cars and we need to know what other cars out there came with the mighty eight incher. I think this would be a great topic. Maybe, being I'm new here, that ya'll have already had this conversation. Point me in the right direction here guys. I'm wanting a cheap factory posi. Any pros and cons? Let me have it. Dave
Wow! What a great website. I guess it doesn't matter what kind of car you have, there's a following. That spec sheet has everything I need for my search. The MII's have nice rear end gears most of them. Now I guess I'll do a search on Pinto's. They probably will have a similar page. The only problem I see with Pinto's is that I thought they had 6.5" rear ends. Maybe, the wagons had a heftier rear end. Don't know. So here's what I have so far. The info for de-coding the Maverick and Comet is: http://www.iit.edu/~petebre/maverick/decode/index.html The info for decoding a Mustang II is: http://mustangii.net/axle_ratio.asp I understand(this will need to be varified) that the part number stamped on the rear housing of a Traction Lock rear end is supposed to be: D4ZZ-4026-A So far some good information. Now, What other cars had eight inchers in them?
