yesterday i went to swap tires from my 71 mav with a 8"rear to my wifes 77 mav and the center hole on the 77 is slightly larger than on my 71. what gives? does this mean that she has a different rear in hers? how do you tell what rear end is in what car? only by the vin or is there some way to look at them and tell? i thought all 8"rears had the same size center hole for the wheel. any help would be nice.

Thats right.....when they changed to disc brakes on the front the hub was larger so they changed the rear axle size too to match the center hole for the wheels.
