ok sooo i am finally going to do the engine swap from my i6 to a 302. ive got a 4 door maverick with a 302 and im going to put the engine in my 2 door. I havent ever pulled an engine before...any tips to make this less painful?
dont throw any thing away till its done and running. work safely. mark all the wires as to where they go.
That link is neat, but really doesn't pull up specific information that he is needing... Swapping the motors aren't so hard however. I'd remove as little as possible from the motor if your going to be using the accessories on the 302 instead of the ones you have now. It can be done with one person but it's alot easier with 2 (and for safety issues) If its a automatic, I would remove the 4 torque converter bolts first and then the bellhousing bolts. Then its just removing hoses, vacume lines and wires and 2 motor mounts. Also, if it's automatic, make sure when you put it back together that you look for a drain on the torque converter. If it has one, you need to make sure you line it up correctly with a hole in the flywheel. I made this mistake once, and ended up busting a fly wheel when I tightned up the converter.
This isn't the the greatest tip...but when I just did the engine swap in my car a friend gave me an old roll around cart. That in itself made the job much easier. All of my tools in the top tray. All of the parts went in the bottom tray.
I find it easier to take out both the tranny and motor so you dont have to mess with the converter bolts while under the car.
If the motor/tranny both are going into the car then I would pull them at a unit. Otherwise, Id rather remove 4 nuts for the converter than have to pull a driveshaft, crossmember, speedo cable, drain the fluid, transmission lines, and all of that.
