SO my car has NOTHING in it the radio bezel is cut for a CD player Ive got a sony headunit I will be putting in it.But have a few questions 1974 is the year Dash speaker size? factory plugs for radio (power/speaker wires)? assuming the rears are 6x9's?
i dont know i just remember that i had to trim the holes to fit my 6x9s. If i were you i would make some wooden adaptors to fit 6" round speakers, ive heard they perform better than the 6x9s.
Its in the speakers design the magnet housing didnt fit in the hole. I tried 5 different sets with the same results. What brand/model did you use?
I have NEVER had a problem with 6x9's. I have used Radio Shack, Pioneer, Kenwood, and Alpine speakers. They all fit with NO cutting. Do a search on dash speakers, I did a write up about my install.
What were you doing, putting the speakers in from the top side? You can hang as big a speaker as you want underneath the rear shelf, as long as it clears the rear seat! This old stuff installs different than new stuff.....
i have Pioneer 6X9's in the back of my '71 2dr and my '73 4dr. im like paintank, i think the dash speaker is like a 5x8 or something. not to mention for the '73-up models, our cars came with places behind the kick panels for 6" (or 6.5") round speakers. this was added when the am/fm stereo 4spkr option was available as for radio install, i had to find a 12V+ constant wire for the radio memory. the factory am radios just worked off of a 12V switch wire and didnt have a memory wire. i just found a wire that had a constant 12v at all times, spliced into it and added an inline fuse and there you have it
I'm running one myself and like the sound quality. The only thing I don't care about is the irritating beeping noise it makes when you turn the keyed power off of it. I'm dealing with a '72 Comet and don't know the differences between the years as far as the stereo installation goes, but I'll tell you what works with mine since the design is basically the same. I believe it's a 5X7. Personally, I'm not using the factory speaker wires what so ever (I only have the front speaker anyway), and I am only using the factory power plug to turn on and off a relay. I'm running new speaker wires down the other side of the car than the main wiring harness is run to prevent power bleed over and the chance of chaffed wires. I'm also not using the factory power wires to run the radio. I'm running a new fused wire from the battery to the inside of the vehicle to keep from taxing the notoriously weak factory wiring harness. From that, I'm splitting the power to the radio memory wire and a relay controlled by the factory plug powering the rest of the radio so the radio turns off with the key switch. I haven't run this system yet with the engine running so I can't tell you if it'll need a filter to get rid of alternator noises or not. On my Green '72, a 6X9 fits under the deck with no problem what so ever. I couldn't tell you about top mounting as I don't care for the look and don't even bother checking since I never mount them there anyway. I haven't put a speaker in there yet as I don't have one at the moment, but once I find one that I like and can afford I'll finish up that part and post for everyone to see. I installed two tweet horns in my 77s dash. Held in place by one screw each. It was a nightmare to get to but it worked well with the rounds in the kickers and the subs in my rear shelf.
I have to apologize for giving you the wrong info. I just went to double check and the 6x9s do fit without trimming. I got confused with another one of my cars probally the fury i used to own. Im barely 20 years old and im losing my memory already....
actually this is what i did! I never thought about mounting them underneath the rear deck. Now it makes sense.
