I know I will probably be crucified for asking this because it is an issue with my chevy truck (I know......I know......'nuff said) but here goes anyway. I have a 1994 Chevy 1500 ext-cab 350. 176K on the clock. My speedometer sometimes reads 30-65 mph and the odometer is turning while in park.:hmmm: The speedo is always jumping around and/or pegged out when I am driving at any speed. This started about 1-1 1/2 months ago. Anyone else ever heard off this?

had a Jimmy GMC once that every time it got ready to turn over another 1.000 miles it would turn 10,000. did that about 5 times and then went to working like it should...

I'm not really concerned about the milage aspect of it, after all, it does have 176K on it. But I've been pulled over twice so far and the question both times was "Do you know how fast you were going?". My reply has been "No, ....but I'm in park right now and my speedometer says I'm doing between 35 and 65 MPH". When both officers looked at the speedo, their expressions were priceless followed by "What the...." No ticket either time, but my luck is bound to run out.

Is the speedometer electronic? Maybe a bad speed sensor, or bad ground somewhere?

Not sure Jamie...have not had the time to really tackle it. I will now though. My hours at work got cut today. (loss of 40% of my pay). I got time now. I have not had to work on the truck all that much. It is a Chevy.....that means it can't possibly produce enough HP to hurt itself.....right?

I recently had problems (and ultimately replaced) the 4L60E transmission in my '95 GMC Safari van and did lots of online research. A couple of things that come to mind are possible problems with stepper motors in your instrument cluster, or possibly even issues with the ignition switch in your truck. Do you have any other symptoms? Any other gauges that don't work, or any weird shifting? If your trans seems to shift normally and the ABS seems to work properly, it is probably NOT the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) located in the tailshaft of the trans...
