I need to rebuild the tranny in my Mav, I also need to change the water pump. I was thinking it might just be easier to pull the motor and tranny together and do the fixes then try to pull the tranny out from the bottom(I have a welded in H pipe). I figure that the exhaust would have to come out to pull the tranny out the bottom and I would have to drain the rad for the pump, I figure 4 more bolts for the rad and 2 more bolts for the motor mounts and I could have it out. Whadda think? Am I thinking wrong(been known to happen before). Russ
depends on where your H pipe is welded and how much slack you have in your exhaust. the rear of the tranny will have to make a pretty steep drop to keep the engine from hitting your radiator support unless you pull them one at a time from the engine compartment. not fun, no matter which way you choose to do it, but if you do clear the exhaust, it is easier to pull them both at once.
i'm thinking that the tranny might have to drop so much to pull the motor, that it still might not clear the h pipe. Either way, you might have to pull the hpipe. I would just pull the tranny by itself-my .02
Before you pull anything, go to a muffler shop and have them put connections (like the picture) on the pipes right after they turn up in front of the rear. I had these made into mine. They are like the newer Mustang pipe connectors. This way just unbolt the collerctos, 4 bolts in the rear, and the whole exhaust system will drop right out and out of your way.
because I am a cheap bastard I used 2 1/2 " collector flanges welded to the 2 1/2" exhaust tubing in front of the mufflers so I can drop from the headers to the mufflers for access. You can cut the tubing with a sawsall put the bolted flanges in and tack weld them in place then remove and finish welding them. Then when you put it back together put the 2 1/2" collector gasket and bling bling it's done.
Well, to me Russ it is 6 in one hand...half dozen in the other. Either way you do it, it ain't going to be a fun job. If it was me...I would probably pull the motor and tranny at the same time. Easier to line them up and bolt together out of the car.
When I had the exh. done I told the guy I wanted a removable cross-pipe, then I left for a hour to do something else when I came back the car was on the ground, and I never thought to look under the tranny to see the pipe. What I wanted to do was put flanges at both ends of the cross pipe so I could remove it(cross pipe). I like the flange idea. I might put them behind the tranny. One more question: What is a fair price for a total tranny rebuild? Thanks for all of the info. Russ
Tranny Rebuild A basic rebuild that is done in my area runs about 150.00, clutches, seals and gaskets. If they require hard parts such as bushings, bands, or various other clutch drums etc. The cost runs up to 300.00 to 400.00. Some shops will exchange yours for one of their rebuilts off the shelf, also recommend a new convertor just for reliability. Most rebuilders won't give a warranty unless the convertor is purchased(pieces and stuff that are trapped in old ones will harm the new rebuild). Have found that C4's are becoming hard to find for cores so the price may be higher in some places. If you have a little time and place to work, maybe find a core C4 and take it apart yourself just to see how it works. Very easy one to rebuild, just a thought, the basic rebuild kit runs about 50.00 here.
