Ive never seen a torque to those. I usually just snug them up enough to seat the bearing and then turn the drum as I loosen the bearing nut until it spins free without drag.

With the wheel rotating...torque it to 17-25 ft lbs...then back the nut off half a turn...then torque to 10-15 INCH LBS. May have to tighten slightly more to get the cotter pin hole to line up.

This is from the Chilton's manual for our cars...

    HTH...

If you do not have a torque wrench you can tighten the nut until you feel drag while rotating the wheel. This will seat the bearings. Do not rotate the wheel and back off the nut. Tighten the nut with your thumb and forefinger. This may sound too simple, but it works.

I do all mine the same way. :thumbs2: No torque wrench is needed for this.

Just posting what is in the book lol...I don't recall ever using a torque wrench on them either...but there is a standard to go by. I always use the ole calibrated fingers method lol...yep...that feels just right :thumbs2:

The ft/lbs torque setting, arbitrary as it is, is just to seat everything. Then you back it up so it doesn't bind the races out of center of the rollers.

But yes, I agree with Frank...17-25? That is a pretty damned broad range. What happens if I go to 27 ft/lbs? Blow out the wheel bearing? :rofl2:

I just spin the wheel while lightly tightening the nut, then back off a 1/4 and then back off more until the cotter pin hole lines up.

Besides, I have never seen an in/lb torque wrench worth a crap, especially one that will hold a huge socket like you need for this nut.

Does anyone know what "finger tight" calculates to as in/lbs?

That may be good to know. While we are at it lets figure out the rest of the torque settings I use when telling my help how tight to make things.

    Finger tight
    wrist tight
    Snug
    little tight
    arm tight
    tight
    Good N Tight
    real tight
    real tight plus a grunt
    as tight as F'n possible

I've always been a stickler for Torque Specks, comes with the occupation I guess. And i do have calibrated Torque wenches LOL but i agree 10-15 inch lb is ridiculous. I think i'll use Maxx's " ole calibrated fingers method" after i seat the bearings to 17-25 Ft Lb LOL I know im anal :grouphug:

Because that is no longer tight it is not considered a torque setting.

Then there's one more setting: this one involves a 4 ft cheater pipe and a 1" drive breaker bar. :thumbs2: You then apply whatever force a 200 pound person can exert to the above wrench/pipe combo.
