New Grabber came with power steering, I have another maverick with all the manual stuff. Should I keep the power steering or swap it out? Robert
I would keep the power steering if it was me. I hate manual steering. My orange car has absolutley NO SLOP in the steering...which is a common complaint about power steering.
My car had power steering but it leaked so much that it just made more cense to convert it over to Manual. I won't lie to ya power steering is nice when driving in town or parking but highway driving I don't even notice.
I vote for manual! Only because it cleans up the engine bay and I am picking up my Wilwood parts in the morning...the booster and shock tower brace on a 77 is huge! This along with shock tower modification's will open up lots of room and allow a big camshaft. Richard
The power steering on these cars gives you no feel for the road. I would use the ps gearbox because of the quicker ratio and the manual linkage. Plus ps gearboxes are usually in much better shape because the hydraulic assist reduces wear.
Dennis, that's exactly what I'm running, need a little more muscle if I need to parrallel park, but other than that, much better than the P/S
Craig, if you have ...NO SLOP...then something is wrong with your system. SLOP...is how it works...(wiggle valve). ...and how many miles do you have on the ...orange car ...now? i replaced everything on my p/s and it still leaked...went to... man-u-well ...and love it.l ...changed ...DRAG LINK and PItMAN ARM. ......
I think it depends on what kind of car you're building. I eliminated P/S on my '73. It does clean up the engine compartment and does away with the drag of a P/S pump. That car also has no A/C. It's a minimal car. However, I am planning another build that will have P/S, P/W, P/L, A/C, electric seats, and a 302 EFI with an AOD. This will get P/S because of the kind of build it will be - a "comfortable" car.
Looks like manual is winning, I think this build will be a weekender / crusier. I plan on building a more radical one and maybe rebuild rhe 6 banger/grandma car...and yes it was owned by a grandma. Got it running last summer but there is a windshield leak and no brakes. and the tank now leaks. Robert
I cant choose one over the other, they both have their benefits. The Power steering adds weight, clutter, motor drag. Then again, Sometimes we like to drink a cup of coffee drivng around town. With Manual its two hands on wheel around town. Mine is manual. Parking in a tight spot with a lot of people around is always fun... A lot of muscling, no question. My wife decided to keep it manual. She doesnt mind too much. Besides, she is used to muscling me around.
A little over 100 miles now. My power steering is 100% rebuilt and/or new. Pump, control valve, slave cyl, hoses, gear box, etc. No leaks.
