Hello guys, i was hoping i can get some help. i'm trying to bleed my power steering system. I replaced some hoses, the system was completely dried. i've tried filling the pump a little, then turning the crank, and keep filling it and turning the crank some more so no air can get in the lines. I also turned the wheels and no luck so far, the front wheels go crazy, they start going left and right...what other steps can i follow? thanks for your help.
To reduce cavitation and foaming up your p/s fluid, you should top off the reservior, then jack the front tires off the ground. Then, without the engine running, rotate the steering wheel back and forth almost to lock about half a dozen times. Recheck the fluid, top off. Then start the engine, wheels still off the ground, and rotate almost lock to lock a few more times. If the pump is quiet, all is good. Drop it down, recheck the fluid, and then drive it like it you stole it.
if its going back and forth, it sounds like you have the hoses on the controle valve to the ram crossed.
X2 I've seen someone cross the lines before, very difficult to turn. To bleed after following the above instructions(if it still is noisy), I use a small tapered plug with a hole in it and a vacuum line connected to it to pull the remaining air out of the filler tube. Use a small vacuum line, 5/32" or so and just touch it to a vacuum port so that you can meter the vacuum and be careful to not draw p/s fluid into the intake.
I believe the only hoses you can hook up wrong are the 2 short hoses from the Control Valve to the Ram. Reverse those and you should be good to go. It is pretty comon to do this. Been there done that. Good luck.
Look here for your application, it may show you the correct hose routing and connections: http://1bad6t.com/Maverick/repair/exploded_views_suspension.html
Well, you guys are certainly experts, the lines were crossed. Power Steering is back, thanks for your help guys.
