Gonna be getting a complete Power Disc Setup for my 74 out of a 76 ... Just want to verify I get everything I need for a simple bolt in swap: Booster + MC + Spacer Power Brake Pedal Prop Valve and Lines to MC Hard lines from MC to Hoses Spindles, Calipers, Backing Plates, Lines, Rotors, Hoses Outer Tie Rod ends Funky Shock Tower Brace I don't need anything from under the dash except the pedal ... correct? Thanks ...
Dan, you are going to need the entire brake pedal/steering column bracket, as it is completely different from the non-power set-up. The power-brake pedal hangs from the left side of the column as opposed to the right side on non-power models...
Indulge me please, guys. a) Why would you need a booster? I always thought we could use the same setup - just use a proportioning valve? (hmmm... maybe that's just for when the front brakes are changed to discs) b) What's the need for new tie-rod ends? (This one has me stumped) c) Why would you need to change the brake pedal (other than to make it look original)? Thanks
That sucks ... didn't really want that hassle .... Thanks ... Is it true you can pull the support without removing they entire steering column?
a) Only need the booster if you want Power Disc b) 75-77 had different tie-rod ends .. I assume for the disc spindles c) Like they said above ... everything is different, including the pedal, on Power Disc cars ...
One more question, what in the heck are we doing up so early? It's 5:23 am. I couldn't sleep. Ha! Always some friends around no matter the time of night or morning. I think this interweb thing is gonna catch on.
Good Morning ... 6:23 here in GA .... First I get ready for work ... then I get my son ready for day camp ....
I believe you will also have to redrill the holes in the firewall to mount the brake booster. That info was added to my technical article on my website a while back. I think the guy that did it kind of went about doing it the hard way, but it was more apparent that they had to be redrilled than in the original article. Power brake swap
Thanks Matt .. just checked your website .... you just made my life much easier by convincing me that a power disc swap ain't worth the headache .... I'll stick with Manual Discs ...
as far as the tie rod ends go, just go to your parts store and ask for tie rod ends from whatever your donor car was. (76 mav? 79 granada?... whatever)
I'm still debating whether to do the swap myself when I convert the Grabber over to disc. I am thinking I will convert to manual disc first and see how I like it compared to the power discs I have now.
I've driven a maverick with the power disc and I believe the difference is more dramatic than going from drums to disc. When I converted mine from 4 lug to 5 with front disc, I really didnt notice any difference in required pedal pressure to stop my car. The disc definately worked better in that they didnt fade and always pulled straight on hard braking. I would love to add power to my disc but I wouldnt use the factory set up mainly because it is too bulky and secondly because I run manuals. I posted a pictures somewhere that showed a guy in Carlisle that got a booster and master cylinder to fit behind the shock tower.
